Job description

Reading Specialist Full-Time | Malden, MA (11-Month Position) Position Overview Under the supervision of the Assistant Directors (K–8) and in alignment with Board of Trustees policies, the Reading Specialist leads the implementation of Mystic Valley Regional Charter School’s Reading Intervention program. This role works directly with students, primarily in Grades K–6, with potential support through Grade 8—to address identified deficiencies in reading and language development. The Reading Specialist uses both internal and external assessment data to identify students in need of intervention, design targeted instructional strategies, and support students in achieving grade-level proficiency. Key Responsibilities Identify students in need of reading intervention through analysis of assessment data Develop and implement targeted instructional plans to address reading and language deficiencies Provide direct instruction to at-risk students throughout the school day, based on an established schedule Deliver ongoing support to newly identified students as needs arise throughout the year Communicate with families to discuss student needs and coordinate enrollment in intervention services Prepare and distribute quarterly progress reports to families in conjunction with report cards Attend and participate in parent-teacher conferences Program Implementation & Collaboration Serve as a key point of contact for families of students receiving reading intervention services Collaborate closely with fellow Reading Specialists and classroom teachers to ensure alignment of instruction and consistency of curriculum Implement Direct Instruction (DI) programs for intervention whenever applicable When DI programs are not applicable, maintain strict fidelity to school-approved curricula aligned with Direct Instruction and Core Knowledge Ensure that no new curriculum is introduced without proper review and approval in accordance with school procedures Additional Responsibilities Support overall school operations through assigned duties as directed by the Assistant Directors (K–8) Contribute to a collaborative, student-centered team environment focused on continuous improvement

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in Reading, Literacy, or related field preferred Minimum of 3 years of experience in a similar role preferred Strong understanding of reading development, intervention strategies, and assessment practices Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities High level of attention to detail and accuracy Effective communication and interpersonal skills Flexible, adaptable, and team-oriented mindset Commitment to upholding school policies, instructional models, and academic standards
