The Nursing Futures Program at the University of Maryland Medical System is a 12-month, fully supported pathway that helps you take the first step toward becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse. We’re looking for team members with the drive to grow, the commitment to care for others, and the determination to build a future in healthcare.

What is Nursing Futures? Nursing Futures is a workforce development program designed to remove common barriers to entering the nursing field—whether financial, logistical, or educational. Through this program, you’ll receive the support, resources, and real-world experience needed to begin your journey toward becoming a LPN.

What You’ll Receive Paid training and hands-on experience in a healthcare setting Financial support for education and program-related expenses Dedicated mentorship and guidance from experienced healthcare professionals Assistance with transportation and other barriers, where eligible A structured pathway into a nursing career within UMMS

What You’ll Do Participate in a structured 12-month program beginning Fall 2026 Engage in classroom learning and on-the-job training Build foundational clinical and patient care skills Work alongside care teams in a hospital setting Commit to program expectations and actively progress through each phase

Have a strong interest in becoming a nurse Are ready to commit to a structured, year-long program Are motivated, reliable, and eager to learn May be facing barriers to entering a nursing program (financial, transportation, childcare, etc.) Want to build a long-term career in healthcare

Minimum Requirements Currently employed as a Patient Care Tech, Certified Nursing Assistant, or Medical Assistant at UM Baltimore Washington Medical Center Is in good performance standing and not currently on a final written warning Is currently employed in a .5 FTE role over above Has worked for UMMS for at least six months Ability to commit to the full 12-month program Strong desire to work in an inpatient LPN role
