Job description

Canoe Instructor – Summer Camp

  • Cranbrook Schools Summer Camp is seeking an experienced Canoe Instructor.
  • This position will supervise and manage all campers to ensure consistent engagement and safety for each camper during the activity.
  • They will deliver canoeing instruction and activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities.
  • They will interact with families and campers in a positive, nurturing and enriching manner.
  • The Canoe Instructor will create lesson plans and supply requirements for the Camp Director and assist in the management of the boating facilities and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • include, but are not limited to:
  • Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures in canoeing.
  • Assist in the implementation of staff training for boating.
  • Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities by conducting daily checks of the area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
  • Clean waterfront area daily keeping it free of hazards and debris.
  • Maintain American Camp Association accreditation standards and Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential licensing requirements applicable to canoeing activities.
  • Attention to campers’ activities, engagement, safety and whereabouts at all times is paramount.
  • Teach assigned sports, skills, crafts, or techniques to campers utilizing the assistance of camp counselors.

Qualifications

High school diploma; experience in activity; teaching experience; certified in activity or be open to early training (if applicable); superior problem-solving skills and ability to relate with campers, staff, and parents.

Preferred

A current lifeguard training certification; currently attending or graduated from college; camp employment experience.

Timeframe

June 8th to August 9th; Weekdays only except first and last. Must be able to work the entire length of camp.

Wage

$18.00/hour
