Position Summary

The position of Mentor requires an overall commitment to the policies and procedures of the New Jersey GEAR UP/College Bound program. Employment and/or continued employment is subject to successfully passing State Mandated Criminal Background Check. The position for Mentor reflects a person who shares their knowledge, skills, information and perspective to foster the academic growth of New Jersey GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs)/College Bound participants. Mentors are examples of the academic goal of the NJ GEAR UP and role models that inspire NJ GEAR UP students. The power of mentoring is that it creates a one-of-a kind opportunity for collaboration, goal achievement, and problem-solving. Mentors are assigned to work with participants in the program to foster academic growth through activities such as one-on-one mentoring, group mentoring, tutoring, classes/workshops, and field trips. These activities give students the motivation and preparation they need to attend and succeed in college. The program operates year-round during the Academic Year (fall and spring) and Summer Sessions (July-Mid August). Fall and Spring Sessions are Monday thru Thursday (Occasional Fridays) from 8:00 am until 2:00pm and/or 3:00pm until 5:00pm. Saturday Sessions are 20 sessions during the Academic Year from 8:00 am to 3:00 p.m.

Essential Functions

  • Participates in all NJ College Bound Mentor Training sponsored by the New Jersey Higher Education and by the Consortium.
  • Provides mentoring support and assistance to the mentees to encourage college attendance.
  • Meets with assigned participants based upon agreed work schedule.
  • Assists in the development of skills necessary for mentees to succeed both personally and academically.
  • Assists assigned participants in developing realistic career/academic goals and expectations.
  • Assists counselor in completing and reviewing Personal Education Plan (PEP) document with program participants.
  • Accompanies mentees on field trips and other activities related to the program.
  • Conducts and/or assists in conducting workshops concerning life skills, college readiness and education planning.
  • Evaluates and documents experiences of assigned mentees.
  • Provides resource information to mentees.
  • Commits to a minimum of one (1) full session (fall, spring, or summer) {willing to make exceptions}.

Prerequisite Qualifications

  • Applicants should have completed the equivalent course load of a sophomore in college (24 Credits) and be a student in good academic standing or a college graduate.
  • At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be excepted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

Salary Information

In compliance with the NJ Pay Transparency Law, the hourly rate/range for this position is $16.00-$30.00 (USD). NJIT considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses or other items.
