Job Description
- Company Overview The Olympic Peninsula YMCA is a non-profit organization that oversees Y programs and focuses on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. General Function: Under the supervision of the Sports Manager, the referee is responsible for officiating youth basketball, flag football and other games for enrolled participants. Key Responsibilities:
- Responsible for being prompt and professional during all games and program activities
- Interact with coaches, other sports officials/umpires, youth, parents, and YMCA staff
- Enforce program rules and policies by maintaining constant surveillance of program participants
- Set up facility or equipment, store equipment, and secure facility upon completion of games/program (on an as-needed basis)
- Report equipment problems
- Ensure the safety of members/participants
- Monitor the area at all times to ensure safety and immediately make changes as necessary
- Provide a positive environment for all participants and actively encourage participation to ensure growth and development.
- Exemplifies appropriate behavior and is a role model for participants; actively listens to all children and shows patience, understanding, and respect for others.
- Instructs and guides participants through the rules of the program and ensures adherence; disciplines children within established guidelines of the YMCA and parents, and only when appropriate
- Immediately reports all unusual incidents or accidents to the Sports Manager and fills out all applicable and necessary reports
- Responsible for upholding all staff safety requirements, including cleaning protocols throughout the day, as required by the department. Additional Expectations Complete all YMCA onboarding and required trainings within designated timelines. Support YMCA events, community partnerships, and fundraising efforts when applicable. Flexible availability for occasional evenings/weekends tied to outdoor events or future programming. All other duties as assigned. QualificationsMinimum Qualifications At least 16 years of age or older Ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergencies. Strong communication skills Must have previous playing or officiating experience, or have completed a referee training clinic Reliable organization and time management skills. Ability to hike moderate terrain, carry supplies, stand for extended periods, and work outdoors in changing weather. Ability to pass background and reference checks. Basic computer and communication skills. CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire). Ability to complete Child Abuse Prevention and all YMCA required trainings. Driver Requirements Private Vehicle, Requesting Reimbursement Valid driver’s license Proof of Insurance YMCA vehicle 25 years of age or older Valid driver’s license Driving record that meets or exceeds YMCA standards, a driver records request will be submitted. Physical Requirements Able to bend at the waist to pick up supplies, sit on the floor, play games, and perform daily cleaning tasks Ability to lift 30 lbs. Must be able to stand or walk for extended periods Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting the voice across distance in normal and loud situations Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate computers and office equipment Vision capabilities are adequate to monitor the youth in the program Hearing and speaking to exchange and gather information, and provide assistance to youth and parents/guardians in the program YMCA is an Equal Opportunity Employer
