- Percentage: None POSITION SUMMARY The Unit Counselor works under the direction of the Unit Leader and camp leadership to provide a positive and enriching experience for campers in their care. Counselors are responsible for delivering high-quality programs, applying training and leadership skills, and supporting activities in the unit and camp as a whole. Unit Counselors live and work in a communal outdoor environment, with most time spent outside at camp on Mount Lemmon.
- Please note: our camp is located at a high elevation in rugged terrain; the ability to successfully live at altitude and navigate this environment is required.
Responsibilities
- Deliver quality program experiences to campers under the guidance of the Unit Leader and supervision of Camp Directors.
- Assist in the general operations of camp as assigned by the Unit Leader.
- Maintain health and safety standards in each unit; assist with housekeeping, sanitation, supplies, and equipment, as needed.
- Support planning and facilitation of all-camp activities, including overnight needs and camp operations when campers are not present, as needed.
- Assist with the opening and closing of the unit, including cleaning and inventories.
- Attend required trainings and meetings (on-site and off-site as necessary).
- Demonstrate and promote courtesy, inclusivity, and professionalism with campers, coworkers, volunteers, and families.
- Perform job duties in accordance with the Council’s Safety and Risk Management Plan.
- Prioritize the safety and well-being of campers, coworkers, and self in all activities.
- Engage respectfully in giving and receiving feedback.
- Perform additional duties as needed to best support the mission of Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona.QualificationsMinimum age 18; prior experience working with children or youth programs required.
- Previous camp experience (as staff, counselor, or participant) strongly preferred.
- Must embrace that this is a summer position, with staff living on property at Camp Whispering Pines; this is not a traditional work week but a full summer work experience.
- Ability to live and work in a high-elevation, outdoor, communal environment for the summer season.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively.
- Enthusiasm for working with children and supporting the Girl Scout mission.
- Commitment to creating inclusive, safe, and empowering experiences for campers.
- Ability to model and uphold health and safety standards consistently.
- Must pass a criminal background check and be or become CPR/First Aid certified prior to camp.
- Willingness to engage in training, professional development, and ongoing feedback.
- Ability to lift a minimum of 20 pounds occasionally
- Ability to successfully pass a Background Check and/or obtain an Arizona Fingerprint Care
- Ability to arrange timely transportation to work locations at set times. If driving, proof of meeting Arizona State requirements regarding auto licensing, driver’s license, and liability insurance, if applicable.
- Flexible and able to problem solve and self-direct
- Capable of working under pressure and handling multiple demands/heavy volume
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) highly desirable.
