The opportunity (Position overview)

Reporting to the School Director, the Nurse is a registered professional nurse or Licensed Vocational Nurse. The School nurse provides direct, specialized, and continuous health care services to an assigned student with complex medical needs.

  • What you will do (Duties and responsibilities)
  • Provide continuous, one-on-one medical monitoring and specialized nursing interventions to the assigned student throughout the entire school day.
  • Must be comfortable and knowledgeable with G-Tube feedings.
  • Administer medication.
  • Assist the student with personal hygiene, toileting, diapering, and feeding as needed.
  • Knowing seizure processes and compliance.
  • Lifting more than 50 + pounds.
  • Assist the student with physical activities, including positioning, ambulation, and transferring to and from a wheelchair using proper lifting techniques or assistive mechanical devices.
  • Ability to transfer learner from bed to Walker/changing table etc.
  • Accompany the student to all classroom activities, therapies (OT/PT/Speech), recesses, and field trips, maintaining constant visual contact.
  • May work with school learners and staff if 1-1 learner is not present at school.
  • May help support policies, procedures, and protocols for the School Site's health program.
  • Maintain accurate, detailed, and confidential daily nursing logs tracking medications administered, procedures performed, vital signs, and overall health status.
  • Provide first aid care and medically prescribed services.
  • May provide follow-up evaluation of learners as needed.
  • Notify parents of illnesses and accidents and secure medical care for learners in emergency cases.
  • Report potential health and safety hazards to the School Director.

  • Essential functions

  • Adjusting or moving objects 50+ pounds in all directions.
  • When needed to support a school or education program, must have the ability to travel by public transit as well as operate a vehicle for self-transportation purposes between worksites.
  • Assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
  • May encounter outdoor elements: high (>90)/low (<60) temperatures, precipitation and/or wind.
  • Ability to work in situations involving the need to make informed and quick decisions.
  • Ability to supervise/manage workers and delegate as needed in project management situations.
  • Reading detailed documentation and analyzing data sets.
  • Writing professionally, both by hand and utilizing computer software.
  • Speaking in public settings, including making public presentations to large and small groups.
  • Dealing and navigating professionally through high-stress situations.

  • What you will bring (Qualifications)
  • Possession of a current license to practice professional nursing.
  • Three years of experience as a professional licensed nurse.
  • High school diploma or equivalent. BA preferred.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, policies, and objectives.
  • Current CPR and first aid techniques and certifications.
  • Ability to problem solve and multitask.
  • Demonstrated capability to maintain effective relationships in a team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written.
  • Very high level of personal and professional integrity and trustworthiness.
  • Maintain confidentiality of learners and their records.
  • Establish and maintain friendly, cooperative and effective working relationships with learners, learners with special needs, parents, facilitators, care team, and administration.
  • Demonstrate standards of moral character and behavior to serve as an effective role model for learners.
