Position Summary
As a Big Canyon Swim Coach, you are responsible for instructing athletes in competitive swimming techniques, ensuring the proper and safe use of equipment, monitoring swimmer performance, and organizing recreational swim meets. This position requires strong leadership, technical knowledge of swimming, and the ability to foster a positive, team-oriented environment.
Duties and Responsibilities
Instruction & Skill Development Teach and demonstrate proper swimming techniques for all four competitive strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Provide instruction on starts, turns, finishes, and race strategies. Break down complex skills into progressive, age-appropriate instruction. Develop and implement structured swim practices aligned with team goals. Equipment Training & Safety Demonstrate the correct and safe use of swim training equipment, including kickboards, pull buoys, fins, starting blocks, and pace clocks. Monitor athletes to ensure proper equipment usage and injury prevention. Always maintain a safe and organized pool deck environment. Swimmer Observation & Performance Feedback Observe swimmers during practices and competitions to assess stroke technique, body alignment, breathing patterns, and overall performance. Identify technical errors and provide clear, constructive feedback. Track athlete progress and adjust coaching strategies accordingly. Encourage positive sportsmanship and team engagement. Swim Meet Organization & Supervision Assist in organizing and conducting seasonal recreational swim meets. Prepare event lineups, coordinate warm-ups, and manage swimmer participation. Support swimmers before, during, and after races. Ensure compliance with team policies and safety procedures during competitions. QualificationsCoaching Qualifications: Strong knowledge of competitive swimming techniques. Previous coaching or competitive swimming experience preferred. Ability to communicate effectively with athletes, parents, and staff. Leadership skills with the ability to motivate and inspire young athletes. Current CPR, and First Aid certifications (or ability to obtain). Basic Skills & Competencies: Excellent observational and corrective coaching skills Strong organizational and time management abilities Ability to manage groups in a dynamic aquatic environment Commitment to safety and athlete development Professionalism and positive attitude Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for extended periods on pool deck. Ability to be a large body of water for extended periods of time. Ability to demonstrate swimming techniques in the water when necessary. Ability to lift and move swimming equipment.
