About the Role

Join SEIU Local 1 & BOMA/Chicago Training & Legal Fund as an ESL Instructor for Adult Education in Chicago, IL, where you will empower adult learners to enhance their English language skills. Company Overview

The SEIU Local 1 Training and Legal Fund is a joint labor management partnership between SEIU Local 1 and the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) Chicago. The Fund supports and empowers SEIU service workers by building knowledge through training classes, seminars and legal assistance. Members eligible for this benefit are janitors or security personnel from diverse backgrounds and language experiences.

Position Description

The ESL Instructor provides English language instruction to adult learners with a focus on workers and union members. The instructor helps build practical English skills for everyday life, the workplace, and community participation. This role involves creating a supportive, engaging learning environment, adapting instruction to diverse needs, and helping learners achieve their English language goals.

  • This is a new Fund.
  • Changes may be made as necessary to fit the needs of the learners, resources available and Fund goals.
  • We currently hold classes virtually with a possibility of in-person depending on need.
  • Classes are two hours, twice a week, all year round with breaks in between.
  • Instructors are paid an additional hour for prep time.

Responsibilities: Instruction & Curriculum

· Plan and teach engaging ESL classes for adult learners at varying levels. · Integrate real-life topics such as workplace communication, health benefits, safety, and worker’s rights into lessons. · Adapt lessons to meet learners’ language levels, goals and learning styles. · Integrate reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in each class.

Learner Support

· Create a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment. · Track learner attendance, progress, and outcomes. · Provide feedback and support to help learners meet their goals. · Refer learners to additional resources (training programs, legal services, benefits, etc.) when needed.

Program collaboration

· Work closely with Training Services Manager and Fund staff to align instruction with program goals. · Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and curriculum development. · Collaborate with other instructors to share best practices.

Administrative Tasks

· Maintain accurate records of attendance and student progress. · Assist with student assessments and placement as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, English, Linguistics, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience teaching English as a Second Language to adult learners is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of labor unions or working at a community-based organization a plus.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to connect with diverse student populations.
  • Familiarity with instructional design principles and learning technologies.
  • Knowledge of Spanish or Polish is a plus.

Schedule

· Classes are two hours, twice a week. Opportunity for weekday/weekend morning, afternoon and evening shifts depending on learner need.
