The position
The In-House Substitute Teacher plays a critical role in maintaining continuity of instruction and supporting daily school operations at Soleil Academy. This position serves as the school’s primary substitute teacher and provides classroom coverage for teacher absences while also supporting operational and supervisory needs across the campus when substitute coverage is not required.
The ideal candidate is flexible, proactive, student-centered, and able to quickly adapt to varying grade levels, instructional environments, and operational priorities while maintaining high behavioral and academic expectations for scholars.
The responsibilities: The In-House Substitute Teacher’s essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Provide quality instruction to all scholars
- Provide classroom instruction and supervision during teacher absences across multiple grade levels and subject areas.
- Implement lesson plans and instructional materials provided by classroom teachers or school administrators.
- Maintain instructional continuity and maximize scholar learning during teacher absences.
- Develop and sustain a positive, achievement-oriented classroom culture rooted in high expectations, scholar motivation, and consistency.
- Utilize classroom management strategies aligned with Soleil Academy’s school-wide behavior systems and expectations.
- Supervise scholars during arrival, dismissal, recess, lunch, and other assigned duties to ensure student safety.
- Support small-group instruction, intervention groups, and classroom assistance when substitute coverage is not required.
- Adapt quickly to different teaching styles, classroom environments, schedules, and operational priorities.
- Support scholars with assignments, participation, and classroom engagement.
- Maintain accurate attendance records and complete all required administrative responsibilities related to substitute coverage.
- Respond calmly and appropriately to challenging situations while maintaining professionalism and composure.
- Be open to feedback and continuous improvement through coaching, professional development, and reflective practice.
Support school operations
- When substitute coverage is not required, the In-House Substitute Teacher may support school operations through responsibilities including, but not limited to:
- Support arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, and transition procedures to ensure scholar safety and operational efficiency.
- Assist front office and operations staff with day-to-day school needs.
- Support supervision coverage for classrooms, common areas, and school events.
- Assist with preparation and distribution of instructional and operational materials.
- Support school-wide events, assessments, testing logistics, and special projects.
- Provide classroom and scholar support during high-need operational periods.
- Assist with student attendance procedures and scholar transitions as needed.
- Support administrators and school staff with additional operational needs aligned to maintaining a safe and structured school environment.
- Contribute to the school community
- Build strong, collaborative relationships with colleagues, families, and scholars through daily interactions and school-based initiatives.
- Actively engage in school and externally provided professional development.
- Prepare for and attend up to five (5) evening scholar, parent, or other school events that do not exceed more than three (3) hours per event, including Report Card Nights, Open House, Scholar Exhibitions, etc.
- Serve actively on at least one (1) school-established action committee during the school year.
- Attend all faculty and professional development meetings.
- Maintain consistent and meaningful communication with staff and families as appropriate.

- Essential functions

- Ability to supervise students indoors and outdoors, including during arrival, dismissal, recess, lunch, and school events.

- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with scholars, families, and staff in person, via phone, and in writing.

The qualifications
Licensure requirements
- Valid California 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
- DOJ/FBI fingerprint clearance
- Tuberculosis (TB) clearance
- Valid First Aid and CPR certification (Adult and Pediatric), issued by an approved provider, preferred
- Professional competencies

- Prior substitute teaching or classroom experience in a school setting
- Experience working in an urban school environment
- Experience supporting elementary-aged scholars
- Candidates who are actively pursuing or interested in pursuing a California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential
- Interest in developing instructional practice and growing within the education field
Compensation and Benefits • Compensation
- The hiring rate for this position is $30.00 per hour.
