Job description

The Madison Area YMCA is hiring Summer Camp Lifeguards to ensure a safe, positive, and engaging aquatic environment for campers and staff. Camp Lifeguards are responsible for maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, on the deck, and in surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Camp Dates: June 22, 2026, through August 27, 2026

  • Are a certified lifeguard or willing to obtain certification prior to the start of camp
  • Want to build leadership skills and serve as a positive role model
  • Can demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards
  • Take safety, responsibility, and supervision seriously
  • Are 18 years or older
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Have prior experience working with youth (camp experience preferred)

What All Staff Receive

  • Competitive pay
  • Up to 40 hours per week (schedule varies)
  • Up to 40 hours paid, mandatory trainings (June 15-19, 2026)
  • Eligibility for a 10-week stay incentive

Working Conditions

  • Ability to hear distress signals and recognize emergency situations in and around the aquatic area
  • Ability to remain alert with no lapse in attention while on duty
  • Ability to visually monitor all areas within an assigned zone of responsibility
  • Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for extended periods
  • Ability to be in water/pool for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to walk, stand, bend, kneel, and move quickly as needed
  • Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids

This includes attending required training, reporting suspicious or inappropriate behaviors, and adhering to procedures that minimize risk. Supervisors are also responsible for providing oversight, feedback, and accountability to ensure staff and volunteers follow these standards.
