DoDEA educates the children of US service members and Defense civilians. According to DoDEA's own worldwide figures, the system runs 160 schools across 9 districts, located in 11 foreign countries, 7 states and 2 territories, spanning 10 time zones, serving more than 67,000 students with over 14,000 employees.

One naming note before you start searching: the agency has been rebranded as the Department of War Education Activity (DoWEA) following the department-level renaming, and its web properties now use that name. "DoDEA" is still what everyone in education says, still what most job postings say, and still what you should search on USAJOBS. Expect both acronyms to appear on official pages for a while.

The system splits into three regions:

• DoDEA Europe — 64 schools across eight countries: Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Turkey and Bahrain. Nearly 25,000 students.
• DoDEA Pacific — 20 schools in mainland Japan across seven communities (8,000+ students), plus 13 schools in Okinawa (6,000+ students), with additional locations in Korea and Guam.

📊 What Does the DoDEA Salary Schedule Actually Pay?

DoDEA educators are paid on Schedule C — Educators and Specialists, published by the Defense Civilian Personnel Advisory Service. It's a lane-and-step grid, same as a US district, except the lanes are set federally and don't vary by base.

Two things make the real number better than the grid suggests.

First, overseas allowances are separate from salary and mostly nontaxable. The Living Quarters Allowance covers rent and utilities up to a maximum set by duty location, grade and family size, and DoDEA confirms LQA is nontaxable. A post allowance may apply at high-cost locations. Depending on where you land, that's effectively $20,000–$35,000 of housing cost you don't pay out of a taxed salary.

Second, it's a federal job. FERS pension, Thrift Savings Plan with matching, and Federal Employees Health Benefits — a package no school district matches.

The catch: stateside DoDEA positions get no LQA, because you're not overseas. A $57,675 start at a base school in Georgia is competitive but not remarkable. The overseas posts are where the compensation story is genuinely strong, and everyone applying knows it.

🎓 How Do You Qualify for a DoDEA Teaching Position?

The requirements are federal, uniform, and not negotiable:

1. US citizenship. Non-negotiable for these positions.

2. A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution.

3. A valid state teaching license in the subject area you're applying for. DoDEA sets its own certification categories that must map to your state credential — check the category list before assuming your license covers the posting.

4. A minimum of 12 semester hours of professional education coursework, including student teaching or an approved equivalent.

5. A favorable background investigation. This is a federal suitability check, and it is the single most common reason offers get delayed.

There's no separate DoDEA exam, but the certification mapping trips people up constantly. A generic "K–6 elementary" state license is straightforward. A K–12 endorsement stapled onto a content major sometimes isn't. Verify your category against DoDEA's requirements before you spend an evening on the application.
