The letter

A esl teacher cover letter, marked up.

Dear Ms. Ferreira,

I am applying for the ESL Teacher position at Highline Elementary. I currently serve eighty-four multilingual students across two buildings, and your posting's description of a newcomer group arriving mid-year is the situation I spend most of my time on.

I work push-in with grade-level teams and run a separate newcomer block for students in their first year in the country. Keeping both means a newcomer is not removed from their class all day — they get intensive support in one block and stay with their peers for the rest.

Highline's posting says the newcomer arrivals were unplanned. That is almost always the case, and the thing that makes it survivable is having a block already timetabled rather than assembled in a fortnight.

I hold a Colorado Professional Teacher License in Elementary Education with a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education endorsement.

I would like to hear how the newcomer group is being supported at the moment, and whether the block is protected in the timetable. I am glad to meet whenever works for you.

Sincerely, Rukmini Patel

What hiring committees look for

A committee hiring an ESL Teacher reads for caseload, service model and newcomer experience. Push-in and pull-out are different jobs, and the letter should say which you have done.

Common questions

Writing a esl teacher cover letter.

Caseload size, how many buildings you cover, and your service model. Open ESL Teacher roles on the board right now: 126.

It should. Push-in, pull-out and sheltered instruction ask different things of an ESL Teacher, and a committee is usually hiring for one of them.

Increasingly it is the deciding factor. An ESL Teacher who has run a newcomer block is qualified for a job many districts in New York have only recently created.
