The letter

A paraprofessional cover letter, marked up.

Dear Mrs. Ansah,

I am applying for the Special Education Paraprofessional position at Sunridge Elementary. I currently support six students across two grade levels under the resource teacher, and your posting's mention of behavior plan support is the part of the role I have most experience with.

I work from written behavior plans rather than improvising, and I record what happened before an incident rather than only what happened during it. That antecedent record is what let our resource teacher change one student's plan in October instead of waiting for the spring review.

I came to schools from retail management, where most of the job was staying calm while somebody else was not. That transferred more directly than I expected, and it is why I sought out the behavior side of this work rather than avoiding it.

I qualified through the Arizona Paraprofessional Assessment, and I hold a substitute teaching certificate and current Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification.

I would like to hear which grade levels the role would cover and how the resource team divides its caseload. I am glad to meet whenever suits the school.

Sincerely, Devon Halloway

What hiring committees look for

A school hiring a Paraprofessional reads for judgement and for what gets reported to the teacher. Naming the students you support and the plans you follow matters more than listing duties everyone assumes.

Common questions

Writing a paraprofessional cover letter.

How many students you support, the setting, and how you work with the supervising teacher. Open Paraprofessional roles on the board right now: 1,878.

Not at all, and it is worth explaining. A Paraprofessional who came from another field usually brings judgement about adults that a school cannot train.

The route you qualified by, plainly stated. Requirements for a Paraprofessional differ across New York, and naming yours saves a screener looking it up.
