About the role

The Upper School Spanish Teacher will design immersive lessons and actively engage students through various teaching methods. They will also contribute to the school's co-curricular programs and support students' social-emotional development.

Upper School Spanish Teacher

Westtown School seeks a full-time Upper School Spanish Teacher to join our faculty in August 2026. The Upper School Spanish Teacher will teach four classes each semester. The successful candidate will be fluent in Spanish, be familiar with educational technologies, and have experience with and a passion for teaching in the target language. This role also includes full participation in the Upper School's co-curricular and residential life.

Full-time Upper School faculty members contribute to the academic, residential, and co-curricular programs in various capacities. Responsibilities include teaching classes, advising a small group of students, serving on school committees, participating in the co-curricular program by coaching interscholastic sports, leading lifelong fitness programs, or supporting collaborative programs such as theater or service. Faculty also contribute to the residential program as Dorm Parents or Dorm Affiliates, which includes one evening of weekly dorm duty and scheduled weekend responsibilities during the school year. On-campus housing may be available for faculty who participate in residential life, but is not guaranteed.

Westtown School is an independent Quaker, Pre-K–12 day and boarding school located on a 600-acre campus in West Chester, PA, approximately 30 miles west of Philadelphia. Guided by Quaker values, Westtown School inspires and prepares our students to become stewards and leaders of a better world.

  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Designs immersive, culturally-responsive lessons in the target language that promote problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, and effective communication while encouraging intellectual risk-taking;
  • Actively engages students through discussion, inquiry, group work, project-based learning, and other student-centered approaches;
  • Supports students in developing critical thinking, empathy, and the ability to collaborate across differences;
  • Helps students hone the essential skills of critical thinking, communication, and empathy, and empowers them to draw out those skills in other people;
  • Nurtures students’ social-emotional development and identity formation;
  • Contributes to building and sustaining an inclusive school community and a program that reflects and values diverse perspectives and experiences;
  • Communicates effectively and in a timely manner with students, colleagues, administrators, and parents;
  • Integrates technology effectively into classroom practice, including the use of Canvas;
  • Contributes to the holistic experience of our students through participation in co-curricular programs, student life activities, and the Upper School residential program;
  • Contributes to students’ development of Quaker values;
  • Engages in collaborative decision-making aligned with Quaker process in service to the school community;
  • Enthusiastically seeks out and participates in both school-sponsored and self-selected professional development opportunities to deepen instructional practice and strengthen community engagement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Spanish or a related field required; advanced degree preferred;
  • 3-5 years of relevant high school teaching experience and an understanding of adolescent development;
  • Fluency in Spanish and the ability to teach all levels of Spanish, emerging to advanced, in the target language;
  • Genuine enthusiasm for full participation in academic, co-curricular, and residential life;
  • Coaching experience and an interest in participating in the athletics program are a plus;
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace and learning management systems such as Canvas, and the ability to incorporate technology effectively into instructional practices;
  • Demonstrated commitment to enhancing an inclusive school community based on cultural competence, commitment to social justice, and respect for all voices;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to build meaningful relationships with students throughout our diverse community;
  • Alignment with Westtown School’s mission and an educational philosophy consistent with the school’s Quaker values.
