Job description

Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc. is one of the largest human services providers in California. The agency operates a variety of programs to serve the poor and strives to find permanent solutions to crisis situations by offering clients the tools and resources needed to achieve greater self-reliance and stability in their lives.

Catholic Charities operates 18 community centers and 10 homeless shelters and also serves the poor with multi-faceted programs, including: after-school childcare; immigration, refugee, youth employment and psychological services; homework assistance and tutoring; English as a Second Language (ESL) and General Education diploma (GED) classes for adults; and services for homebound seniors and pregnant and parenting youth. In this way, Catholic Charities maintains a continuum of care for clients as they move from vulnerability to self-sufficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Provide crisis intervention counseling and outreach services.
  • Participates in outreach to meet with and counsel youths on the street, including putting up flyers to attract clients.
  • Provide a safe environment for participants and staff.
  • Instructs and trains volunteers in methods and procedures.
  • Completes intake procedure and maintains client records and activity reports.
  • Determines the best possible shelter alternatives for runaways and homeless youth.
  • Find appropriate shelter and/or professional counseling for clients.
  • Meets clients’ immediate physical needs such as food and clothing.
  • Transports and supervises clients.
  • Displays sensitivity to the client population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.
  • Answers phone calls, giving phone counseling when necessary.
  • Possession of a valid California driver’s license to drive a company vehicle to transport youth.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Two years of college required
  • Six to twelve months of related experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Experience working with a non-profit a plus.
  • Self-motivated, creative, and able to implement new ideas.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks, work under deadline, and work independently as well as collaboratively with lay leaders and professionals.
  • Exceptional ability to take initiative, problem-solve, and exercise sound judgment and decision-making skills.
