Position Overview

The Learning Center is seeking Instructional Student Assistant (ISA) applicants for Tutor positions.

Fresno State’s Learning Center is a space that encourages students to grow intellectually as critical thinkers. We advance student success by actively using effective learning strategies to improve content understanding and course grades. Tutors do not teach, but instead, facilitate students’ learning of difficult topics within historically challenging courses or subjects. The Learning Center aims to boldly integrate the culture and values of each student to inspire a community of life-long learners.

Please see below for key characteristics associated with the position of a Learning Center Tutor:

Student support: Meets with students who seek academic support in-person or online, drop-in or by appointment, for a specific subject (Business, Chemistry, Math, etc.) or a specialized skill (Microsoft Office, Python, APA format, etc.)

Schedule: Works 6-17 tutoring hours per week in shifts of at least 1 hour, 1 prep hour per week, and 2 hours per month (Friday 3-5pm) for monthly meetings with all tutors

Location: At the Learning Center for all work hours, except for selected meetings and online drop-in tutoring shifts

The department reserves the right to choose the most qualified candidate for each position and to assign Instructional Student Assistant to the courses that are appropriate for the department program and curriculum in any given semester. Due to staff and curriculum changes, courses offered may vary, and no guarantee of employment from semester to semester can be made.

Appointment Dates

Hours

0-20 hours per week.

  • Job Duties may include the following, but will be dependent upon the team to which the instructional student assistant will be assigned:
  • Perform individual and/or group academic support
  • Plan and facilitate outreach and marketing efforts to recruit students
  • Prepare events, material, and references for students
  • Attend all scheduled tutoring shifts, prep meetings, trainings, and monthly meetings

Qualifications

  • Minimum cumulative Fresno State GPA of 3.0
  • Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff and students from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic background.
  • Must be enrolled at least half-time in a degree program at Fresno State (at least 6 units for undergraduates and 4 units for graduate students)

Preferred Qualifications

• Letter of recommendation from the applicant’s current or former Fresno State faculty from a relevant department or subject

The review of applications will begin immediately and may continue for next semester. For full consideration, the application and all required materials must be submitted by July 15th for Fall semester and December 15th for Spring semester. The following documents are required to upload:

It should contain your contact information, your employment and educational history, skills such as computer programming, familiarity with commonly used computer programs, as well as internships, awards, volunteer service, training and any other experience you have that is relevant to education. 3. Current unofficial transcripts from your undergraduate and graduate education. If you have attended more than one institution, please copy and combine these transcripts into one document. Salary: Each department has different salary scales. Please check with your department for your Base Salary. The Salary range for Instructional Student Assistants starts at $17.86 per an hour.

Assignments: Assignments are made by Department Chair or Program Coordinator after consultation with the candidate.

Duties Form: Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Unit 11 [https://www2.calstate.edu/csu-system/faculty-staff/labor-and-employee-relations/Pages/unit11-uaw.aspx], a Duties Form (see Appendix E of the CBA) will be completed between the Department and Academic Student Employee. This form substantiates the jobs included for the department Instructional Student Assistant position.

Instructional Student Assistant positions are for matriculated students at Fresno State.

Students are limited to 20-hours of part-time work on campus.
