Position summary

The Preschool Teacher is responsible for creating a warm, engaging, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for children ages 2–5. The teacher plans and implements daily activities that promote social, emotional, physical, and cognitive growth in accordance with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Office of Child Care (OCC) regulations and Montessori philosophy.

Key responsibilities

  • Plan and implement daily lessons and activities that align with Maryland Early Learning Standards and Montessori principles.
  • Ensure classroom environment meets MSDE and OCC safety and compliance standards.
  • Observe and document each child’s growth and development.
  • Foster a positive, respectful, and inclusive classroom culture.
  • Maintain open, professional communication with families regarding children’s progress.
  • Collaborate with co-teachers and administrators to support the overall success of the classroom.
  • Attend required staff meetings, professional development trainings, and workshops.
  • Maintain accurate attendance, incident, and progress records.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 19 years old.
  • Must hold a high school diploma or equivalent (college coursework preferred).
  • Completion of the 90-hour Preschool Teacher Certification (45-hour Child Growth & Development + 45-hour Preschool Curriculum course) approved by the MSDE Office of Child Care.
  • 9-hour Communication Course (approved by MSDE).
  • Basic Health and Safety Training (approved by MSDE).
  • Current First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • Maryland State background check and fingerprint clearance.
  • Experience working in an early childhood or Montessori setting preferred.

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field.
  • Montessori certification (AMI, AMS, or MACTE accredited).
  • Two or more years of teaching experience in a licensed early childhood program.
