Position Overview
Under the supervision of the Principal, the Special Education Teacher manages and implements the school curriculum; supervises Instructional Aides; and supervises the students.
Essential Responsibilities
- 1.
- Evaluates the needs of the pupil in order to design and process an academic and vocational program based on those needs through the IEP.
- 2.
- Develops implements and ensures application of curriculum appropriate to the individual students.
- 3.
- Participates in the hiring and training of Instructional Aides.
- Supervises Instructional Aides in the delivery of curriculum and behavior management.
- Maintains documentation in compliance with the Agency’s standards.
- 4.
- Develops, modifies and maintains behavioral intervention program specific to the needs of the current population.
- 5.
- Cooperates with the multi-disciplinary team to develop comprehensive treatment plan for each student.
Essential Requirements
- 1.
- Bachelor’s Degree and possess a valid California Teaching Credential and Special Education authorization as indicated by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
- 2.
- Must possess a valid California driver’s license, personal automobile insurance, and driving record that meets the standards outlined in the Agency's Personnel Policy; Motor Vehicle Operating Standards.
- 3.
- Must be physically and mentally fit to work with potentially violent clients in accordance with the Agency’s Physical and Mental Fitness Standards policy; must be willing to complete a health screening physical examination that includes a drug screen and back screen; must have the unrestricted capacity to employ physical restraint techniques in a professionally safe manner; and must meet community care licensing standards for employment.

- Requires the ability to think and act quickly in emergencies; effectively deal with personal danger; maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of exercising sound judgment and rational thinking under varied circumstances.
- Must be able to work safely with seriously emotionally disturbed children who may become violent, and physically and verbally offensive, without reacting in a negative, cruel or hostile manner towards the client.
