Position Summary

HISD is dedicated to providing all students with access to social-emotional learning and academic success. As part of the district’s high-performance culture, the School Counselor, SEL is responsible for designing and implementing a comprehensive, culturally responsive school counseling program. This role supports students by fostering social, emotional, and behavioral growth, ensuring they are equipped with the skills necessary to thrive academically and personally. Through collaboration with school staff, families, and the broader community, the counselor strengthens student engagement and school climate, driving HISD’s mission of educational transformation. ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES Develops and implements a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with HISD’s vision for student success, utilizing the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) framework. Uses data-driven decision-making to identify and address student needs, ensuring counseling interventions support academic, social, and emotional growth. Facilitates social-emotional learning by working with teachers and administrators to integrate trauma-informed practices, culturally responsive strategies, and positive behavioral interventions into daily instruction. Provides direct counseling support to students, addressing social-emotional challenges and removing barriers to academic success. Collaborates with school staff, parents, and community stakeholders to create emotionally safe learning environments that prioritize student well-being and achievement. Leads professional development sessions for teachers and staff on social-emotional learning, behavior management, and culturally responsive strategies, reinforcing HISD’s commitment to a high-performance school culture. ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES CONTINUED Perform other counseling and guidance related duties as assigned. POSITION REQUIREMENTS Education Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Counseling and Guidance. Experience Two years exemplary teaching experience. Working knowledge of personal computers and applicable software. Other Requirements Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral forms with all levels of management, both internal and external to the department. Ability to discern the sensitivity of internal/external communications in a large public organization and an awareness of the elements of public relations. Ability to work effectively with a diverse student and community population. Ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into focus; judge distance (close and distant); reach with arms extended and use hands to manipulate the keyboard. Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, walk, twist, bend, climb and/or be mobile. Houston Independent School District is an equal opportunity employer.
