About the Role

Position Summary

The VISTA Learning Coach will support implementation of the Freedom School Summer Program in the Cherry Hill community, serving elementary students through culturally responsive literacy, enrichment, and youth development activities grounded in the seven principles of Kwanzaa (Nguzo Saba).

During the summer program, the VISTA member will support daily literacy and enrichment sessions by reinforcing lessons that connect Nguzo Saba principles to reading, dialogue, and real‑world examples of community building. The member will assist with independent reading, read‑alouds, project‑based learning, and enrichment activities designed to strengthen student engagement and leadership development. The position requires high energy and daily participation in Harambee, including cheers, chants, songs, and other community‑building practices that help create a positive and affirming learning environment.

The VISTA will facilitate small‑group discussions and reflective activities that support student identity development, collective responsibility, self‑determination, and leadership. The member will assist with interactive learning experiences such as journaling, collaborative projects, and storytelling that allow students to apply Nguzo Saba principles to their own lives and community experiences.

The VISTA Learning Coach will support field trips, enrichment activities, and a community service project that centers youth voice and provides scholars with opportunities to address real community needs. The member will also support students in the creation of a final Freedom School project, including preparation for a family and community showcase where scholars present what they have learned through displays, presentations, or creative work.

During the program closeout period, the VISTA will assist with student data collection and organization, contribute to end‑of‑program documentation, and participate in staff reflection and planning activities. These efforts help identify lessons learned and strengthen future Freedom School and school‑year extended learning opportunities.

This is a Volunteer opportunity.
