Position summary

Under supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor, the Lifeguard is responsible for monitoring and ensuring the safety of patrons using the aquatic facilities, as well as enforcing rules and regulations regarding pool use. Position completes routine and complex assignments requiring specialized knowledge and/or be responsible for assisting in the oversight of a critical operation, project or service.

Essential duties

  • Maintain constant surveillance of members in the facility; act immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency
  • Enforce rules and regulations regarding pool use
  • Provide emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services
  • Present professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintains a high standard of customer service
  • Perform various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility
  • Prepare and maintain appropriate activity reports
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education

• Equivalent to graduation from high school and/or a technical/vocational program.

Experience AND Certifications (Current and valid)

• American Red Cross Lifeguard/Lifeguarding

Special Requirements

  • Must be able to swim 300 yards continuously using both front crawl and breast stroke
  • Must be able to swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10-pound object and remove it from the pool within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
  • Must attend required Student Recreation Center and USU employee orientation and trainings as well as department specific trainings and meetings

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced First Aid (Title 22, EMR, EMT)*

These certifications must be maintained throughout employment in order to remain in the position.

*Incumbents must obtain Title 22 Instructor certifications within one year of hire.

Working conditions

  • Work is typically performed outdoors in varying and occasionally extreme (hot) weather conditions.
  • Must be flexible, adaptable, and readily able to adjust to changes in work environment.
  • Position requires daily public contact.

Supervision

Supervision is provided by the Aquatics Supervisor.

Pay, benefits and work schedule

This position is employed through University Student Union (USU).

Anticipated hiring rate

$18.66 per hour; summer rate: $21.66 per hour.

The salary range is $18.66 - $19.91 per hour.

Effective June 21, the anticipated hiring rate

$19.50 per hour, summer rate*: $22.50 per hour.

*The summer rate is in effect June through August.

Effective June 21, the salary range is $19.50 - 20.75 per hour.

HOURS: Part-time, up to 28 hours per week

Temporary

Temporary 6 month appointment; may be renewed. Schedule varies based on department need. Work schedule to be determined by supervisor.
