Job description

  • The goal of Concord Academy Summer Camp is for all campers to leave us a better and more confident swimmer.
  • This position is part of the Swim Staff and is involved in all swim related activities including swim lessons, free swim, and occasional evening & weekend lifeguarding shifts.
  • This position spends half the day teaching swim lessons and the other half lifeguarding.
  • Swim Staff are responsible for ensuring the safety of all campers, staff, and any other individual who may use the pool.
  • They are responsible for leading safe, skills based, and fun swim lessons for groups of 4 or more campers depending on age and swim ability.
  • Candidate must be available to work the majority of our 8-week season, including some evening and weekend shifts, and attend all staff training dates the week before camp starts.
  • Additional working weeks in June and August can be contracted.
  • This is a seasonal position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current Lifeguard and CPR/AED/First Aid certifications from a nationally recognized organization
  • WSI certification strongly recommended
  • Experience lifeguarding and teaching swimming
  • Desire and ability to work with children and adults in a busy camp setting
  • Desire and ability to supervise, lead, and positively manage staff and campers in a cooperative, team-oriented camp atmosphere
  • Possess excellent character, integrity, adaptability, patience, self-control, enthusiasm, and sense of humor
  • Ability to accept guidance and supervision
  • Ability to relate well to peers
  • Must be 16 years of age or older
  • Must pass a MA State run background check including a CORI and SORI

Responsible to: Camp Administrative Team

General Responsibility

Teach swim lessons and guard the pool during free swim and other camp hours.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Prepare/set-up pool area prior to the camp season
  • Teach safe, fun, and meaningful swim lessons to children at an appropriate swim level
  • Evaluate campers in your swim lessons and complete necessary swim certifications for records, campers & families
  • Participate in implementation of all swimming activities including teaching and lifeguarding
  • Maintain accurate records on all campers as they progress through swim levels
  • Communicate with parents/guardians about their child when necessary and appropriate
  • Be a part of daily maintenance and check of pool area for cleanliness and safety concerns
  • Attend all staff trainings date the week before camp opens
  • Supervise all swimming activities and enforce pool rules
  • Monitor proper use of equipment and maintain equipment in good working condition
  • Conduct daily check of all equipment in pool area for safety, cleanliness, and good repair
  • Submit orders for equipment and supplies when needed, ensuring timely arrival of materials
  • Compile a written equipment and supplies inventory at the end of the season
  • Assist in packing all materials and supplies at the end of the season
  • Evaluate the current season and make suggestions for the following season
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Essential Functions

  • Ability to communicate effectively with other staff and provide necessary instruction to staff and campers
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the pool area
  • Cognitive and communication abilities to plan and conduct the activity to achieve camper development objectives
  • Physical ability to demonstrate the proper stroke techniques
  • Ability to work with different age and skill levels
  • Possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision to campers

Job Requirements

  • Available 8:15am-4:30pm, Monday – Friday; some evening and weekend shifts
  • Some high-level activity which may include running, dancing, swimming and jumping
  • Occasional lifting, bending, and climbing stairs
  • Frequent talking, listening, walking, sitting, and standing
  • Demonstrate lifeguard and swimming skills including proficiency in all strokes, rescues, removals, CPR and first aid

Pool opens for CA Residents/Community: June 8 – 21, 2026

Staff Training: June 15 – 18, and June 20, 2026

Summer Camp: June 22 – August 14, 2026

Pool available for CA Residents/Community: August 15 – 23, 2026

Salary Range

$4,600 - $5,600, based on experience
