Job description
Description Counselors are responsible for the supervision of campers with consistent attention to all aspects of the camp experience, including program participation, health, happiness, discipline, cleanliness, safety, daily routines, and the development of character and skills. At all times, counselors will work under the direct supervision and guidance of the Program Director, Assistant Director, Unit Leads, Head Counselors, or another designated supervisory professional, ensuring compliance with program expectations and licensing requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Attends all training meetings as assigned Observes and learns camp procedures through working with experienced head and senior counselors. Acts as a positive role model for children. Appropriately interacts with campers and helps with activities to enhance their camp experience. Assists in maintaining a safe environment for students, in coordination with the Head and Senior Counselors. Sets a good example for staff and campers in all areas, including cleanliness, clean-up, rules, and sportsmanship. Cleans assigned areas as needed. Participates in all camp-wide special events and ending session special events. Demonstrates cooperative professional attitudes and flexibility in response to job requirements. Provides support for the Head Counselor and Senior Counselor whenever necessary or possible. Be concerned for the social adjustment of EACH camper. Promote camper participation in ALL activities.

Qualifications
In accordance with New York State Department of Health (DOH) licensing regulations, all camp staff are required to participate in and successfully complete mandatory pre-camp counselor orientation and training prior to any interaction with or supervision of campers. Staff must demonstrate emotional maturity, good moral character, and personal integrity, as required by DOH standards. A genuine interest in and enjoyment of outdoor activities is also expected, as the camp program is largely outdoor based.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Ability to work as a team member with other counselors and adult staff members. Experience in working with children in a group setting. Responsible, friendly, enthusiastic, patient and willing to learn.
Compensation
This is a seasonal stipend-based position paid through payroll. The total summer stipend for this role is $5,000.10, covering the full Camp Funkist season (June 25–August 21, 2026), including required training days and scheduled camp days. Stipends are distributed semi-monthly in accordance with the YWCA payroll schedule and are prorated across all paid days in the season. This stipend reflects compensation for the full seasonal assignment and is not calculated on an hourly basis.
