About the role

The teacher will implement the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston religion standards using project-based learning to foster academic and social development. They are also responsible for supervising students, providing constructive feedback to parents, and serving as a student advisor.

Description Summary

The Middle School Religion teacher is a committed Sacred Heart educator who will relate well with 5th-8th graders and is passionate about teaching middle school students. The ideal candidate will embrace both the school’s mission and a myriad of responsibilities involved with being an educator at an independent school.

Primary Responsibilities

Implement the standards for Religion set forth by the Archdiocese of Galveston Houston within the Duchesne curricular framework of rigorous, project-based learning that focuses on critical thinking, reading, writing, and speaking Plan, organize, and lead activities designed to promote academic, social, and emotional development in a supportive and engaging learning environment Create an emotionally responsive, caring, positive, and accepting environment supportive of the individual development of each child and family Supervise young children and ensure a safe and loving environment including the ability to monitor and respond to events going on at all times in the classroom, outdoor play areas, and other areas of the campus Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students varying needs and interests Act as a student advisor guiding a group of grade level students in fully realizing the Goals and Criteria of the Sacred Heart, and help develop the whole child within this model Attend staff meetings, serve on committees as required, seek and attend professional development opportunities Evaluate each student’s growth and performance Provide constructive feedback to parents Prepare and distribute report cards online Other duties as assigned

Requirements

Minimum Education/Prior Experience/Qualifications Required In the performance of his/her duties, Employee shall be guided by the Goals and Criteria of the Sacred Heart and the Catholic Faith. Candidates must also possess: Catholic in good standing Bachelor’s Degree, including 12 credit hours in education or a valid state teaching certificate. Level 3 completion Catechist Certification of the Archdiocese of Galveston Houston Catechist Formation Program High level of competence using technology Experience in a PreK – 12 environment, preferably in independent schools is a plus Strong references to convey teaching abilities Core Competencies: Excellent communication skills with attention to detail. Ability to maintain records with accuracy and confidentiality. Treat parents as partners in their child's education. Empathetic to children’s and parents’ needs. Upon Hiring Successful completion of fingerprint-based and sexual offender background checks. Successful completion of CMG Safe Environment Training. Current CPR certification. Essential Expectations All faculty and staff members at Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart are expected and required to do the following: Overtly support and act in accordance with the Goals and Criteria of the Society of the Sacred Heart; this expectation includes attendance at and applicable participation in faith-based practices. Foster a safe, predictable, and supportive environment. Interact with colleagues in a respectful and collegial manner that contributes to a healthy school culture. Demonstrate appropriate planning and preparation and fulfill routine responsibilities in a thoughtful and timely manner. Uphold professional standards of personal presentation, professional courtesy, discretion, punctuality and attendance at all required meetings and events. Appropriately carry out specific duties as determined by the Head of School and/or supervisor. Maintain professional credentials and complete required training. Participate in and provide documentation for at least one professional development opportunity per year in addition to those required and provided by the school. Respect the confidentiality of the school, its employees, students, and families. Comply with the policies and procedures as articulated in the faculty and staff handbook. Authentically engage in the school’s self-reflection process that requires written goals and measured progress towards them.
