  • School: Located in the heart of Oakland, Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children is a one-of-a-kind educational experience committed to empowering our students to realize their full potential. The School also provides vital early intervention and outreach services to visually impaired students, with or without additional challenges, throughout western Pennsylvania. Founded in 1887, our School is best equipped to care for and educate students with visual impairments. As a private institution chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the School educates approximately 200 enrolled students from 80-85 school districts within western Pennsylvania.

  • Overview: The Outreach Teacher is responsible for designing, implementing, and monitoring individualized instructional programs for students with visual impairments not enrolled at WPSBC. Through contracts with school districts and intermediate units in the Greater Pittsburgh area, the Outreach Teacher provides educational services and supports to students with visual impairments enrolled in or served at those organizations.

Position Information

FLSA Status: Exempt Schedule: To be determined based on caseload. Typically Mondays-Fridays during core school hours. Working Days: 189 total days per year.

  • $46,501-$59,935 based on degree, experience, and salary scale

  • Responsibilities: Perform or facilitate necessary assessments (i.e. learning media, functional vision, assistive technology, expanded core curriculum, and orientation and mobility). Assess students to aid in the development of an Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) Provide direct and/or consultative services per the IEP. Conduct all evaluations consistent with the role of a TVI and O&M Specialist. Work collaboratively with families, students, district or intermediate personnel and WPSBC Outreach team to develop IEP goals and objectives in the Expanded Core Curriculum. Provide consultation to the classroom teachers, related service providers, and other involved personnel. Adapt materials as needed to enable children with blindness and visual impairments to benefit from instruction and access curriculum. Maintain ongoing communication with all parties involved in the child’s education, including parents.

  • QualificationsQualifications: Valid PA Department of Education certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired Master’s degree is preferred; Bachelor’s degree is accepted. Orientation and Mobility Specialist certification (ACVREP) preferred. Previous experience teaching students with visual impairments preferred. Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills. The individual must hold and maintain proper clearances for Acts 34, 114, and 151.

Requirements

Candidates must hold a valid PA Department of Education certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired. A Bachelor's degree is required, with a Master's degree and ACVREP Orientation and Mobility Specialist certification preferred.
