Duties and Responsibilities
Provide instruction and instructional support to students, under the direction of the Teacher
Independently carry out assigned individualized educational and therapeutic programs both inside and outside the classroom (therapeutic pool program, specially designed physical education, etc.)
Engage in any necessary lifting, moving and/or positioning tasks for students
Facilitate improved gross motor, fine motor and range of motion skills
Assist in creating and maintaining a positive, safe and healthy educational environment, addressing students’ health, medical and safety needs
Interact with students in an age-appropriate manner, respecting their privacy, dignity, and confidentiality
Assist the Teacher in ensuring that all classroom staff respectfully interact with students, staff and visitors
Participate in creating and maintaining a positive work environment
Effectively and appropriately interact and communicate with classroom and professional team members
Maintain an effective level of interaction with students during transition
Assist the Teacher in ensuring that classroom staff are actively engaged in an appropriate level of interaction with the students throughout the day
Handle and utilize student equipment appropriately and independently, understanding the purpose and function of the equipment
Ensure the maintenance and care of classroom, equipment and materials
Assist in the design and development of classroom projects and instructional materials and materials including daily preparations
Ensure the Teacher is aware of detailed, relevant information and observations concerning the students' needs, behavior, academic performance and overall running of the classroom
Provide the Teacher with information about students that will assist the Teacher in the development of appropriate learning experiences
Implement and direct classroom programs/activities with individual, small and large groups of students
In the absence of the Teacher, support the Substitute Teacher to ensure effective classroom programming (implementation of programs, direction of classroom staff, decisions regarding staff assignments, complete daily/weekly records, etc.)
Participate in the training and direction of Paraprofessionals, Substitute Aides and Classroom Volunteers
Communicate appropriately with parents and caregivers
Carry out any other classroom related activities
Provide behavioral support for students, implementing agency approved emergency physical interventions.
All other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma, GED or equivalent
NYS Teacher Assistant Certification or working towards the certification and have passed the NYS Assessment of Teaching Assistant Test (NYSATAS)
Ability to read, write, speak and understand English including interpreting documents such as safety rules and policy and procedure manuals
Preferred Qualifications
• 1+ years of experience working with youth in an educational or residential program
