Position Summary
The Archery Instructor provides high-quality instruction in safe and engaging archery programs for youth, teens, and adults. This position creates a positive, educational, and inclusive environment where participants can develop skills in focus, coordination, patience, and confidence. The Archery Instructor is responsible for class setup, equipment safety, range supervision, and instruction aligned with national archery standards and YMCA values.
- This role is active and hands-on, a fit for a nationally certified instructor who enjoys teaching fundamentals and inspiring confidence in participants of all skill levels.
- Essential Functions: Lead engaging weekly archery classes that emphasize safety, skill progression, and enjoyment for all participants.
- Set up and take down archery range equipment before and after each session; ensure targets, bows, and arrows are properly maintained and stored.
- Conduct safety briefings, teach proper shooting form, and monitor all range activity for adherence to safety protocols.
- Provide individualized coaching and constructive feedback to help participants improve technique and confidence.
- Incorporate YMCA character values—Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility—into instruction and interactions.
- Maintain accurate attendance, equipment inspection, and incident records.
- Communicate regularly with parents, caregivers, and program supervisors about class progress and participant needs.
- Attend required trainings, meetings, and certification updates as scheduled.
- Model and reinforce positive behavior, sportsmanship, and respect for all participants and staff.
- Ensure a welcoming, inclusive, and safe program environment at all times.
- Check safety of bows, arrows, and other equipment perform needed maintenance.
Qualifications
Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience teaching or coaching archery. At least 1 year working in outdoor education, or youth recreation. Must be available to work evenings and weekends. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills. Certifications & Requirements: CPR, First Aid, and Child Abuse Prevention certification required within 30 days of hire. Adhere to Blood borne Pathogen standards and attend annual training. Must be at least 18 years old. Current NFAA, NASP, or USA Archery Certification (or equivalent) required. Skills & Traits: High-energy coaching style with an engaging teaching presence. Excellent group management and communication skills. Creative, patient, and adaptable when working with a wide range of personalities and ages. Comfortable demonstrating physical skills and maintaining an active presence throughout class. Team player with a positive, growth-minded attitude. Physical Demands: Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Frequent kneeling, squatting, and equipment movement required. Work Environment: High-energy, loud, and fast-paced gym environment. Evening and weekend availability required.
