Job description

Overview Assistant Swim Coach The Assistant Swim Coach provides technical instruction, motivational support, and upholds safety standards for the YMCA swim team. This role serves as a positive mentor for youth athletes, helping to cultivate a competitive yet inclusive environment in alignment with YMCA of San Diego County and USA Swimming standards. The Assistant Swim Coach is responsible for assisting in daily workout execution, fostering a sense of community among diverse participants, and upholding the Y’s core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. Responsibilities

Actively monitor all participants during practices and meets to ensure a safe environment, strictly enforcing pool rules and YMCA safety protocols. Provide clear demonstrations of swimming strokes and assist the Swim Coach or Head Swim Coach in delivering technical corrections to improve athlete performance and form. Assist with the setup and breakdown of the swim team area for practices and meets. Assist in the execution of daily workout plans, including leading age-appropriate stretching, warm-up, and cool-down routines. Respond to individual participant needs with patience and encouragement, fostering a positive and inclusive team culture for all skill levels. Maintain effective communication with athletes, parents/guardians, and fellow staff regarding practice schedules and swimmer progress. Attend all mandatory aquatic staff meetings and safety trainings to stay current on YMCA policies and emergency procedures. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

General: Minimum age of 16 years of age Education: Formal or informal education or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance, supplemented by specialized training in competitive swimming, water safety, aquatics, lifeguarding, or a related field. Years of Experience: A minimum of one (1) year of coaching or instructing experience in an aquatic environment A Minimum of two (2) years of competitive swimming experience License & Certifications: Current Basic Life Support for the Professional Rescuer (BLS) that must be from one of the following certifying organizations: American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or American Safety and Health Institute Current First Aid certification and must be from one of the following certifying organizations: American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or American Safety and Health Institute Must possess or have the ability to obtain Safety Training for Swim Coaches certification within 3 months of hire. Must possess or have the ability to obtain Principles of Competitive Swimming and Diving certification within 30 days of hire. YMCA will consider qualified applicants with a criminal history pursuant to the San Diego County Fair Chance Ordinance and the California Fair Chance Act.
