The School Nurse develops and coordinates a comprehensive health program for students while providing nursing coverage at the Rural Health and Specialty Clinics. Key duties include administering medications, managing chronic conditions, and collaborating with parents and staff to ensure a safe learning environment.
Administer medication or coordinate the administration of medication by designated staff. Monitor the effects of medication on students and coordinate the collection of information regarding medication needs of students. Maintain and update individual medical and health records for students/staff. Communicate with students, parents and staff on health needs for individual students and general health promotion. Conduct in-service training for staff on proper medical/health care procedures to be utilized in the care of students. Has primary responsibility to implement and/or coordinate student health care procedures in accordance with district operating procedures and acts as a team member in planning for student/staff health care. May administer and/or recommend first aid treatment to students and staff. Refer students and staff needing further attention to appropriate agencies or medical specialists and communicate such referrals to School Administration. Monitor and distribute medical and first aid supplies. Monitor medical conditions of students and staff such as temperatures, seizures, injuries, and communicable diseases. Responsible for ordering supplies and maintaining the Nursing Office. Coordinate and/or conduct medical screening tests. Chair the Health and Wellness Committee. Participate in IEP meetings as appropriate. Coordinate and participate in routine in-service training as required. Demonstrate and model safe, prudent work behaviors and practices that result in a safe and healthy environment. Communicate effectively one-on-one and in small groups. Exercise judgment in dealing with emergencies and special health needs. Handle emergency situations calmly and effectively. Use discretion in handling confidential records. Provides coverage at the Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital Rural Health Clinic and Specialty Clinic. Demonstrate appropriateness in meeting objectives in age-specific areas. Perform other duties as assigned. QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS: Current State of Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) license or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license BLS Certified Experience in an educational setting with an instructional background preferred
