Job description

  • A Sinai Akiba Academy Athletics Coach is an integral member of our Staffulty, influences and helps develop the character of our students and serves as a role model exemplifying Sinai Akiba Academy’s Core Values.
  • Key to the role is supporting the student - athletes’ athletic, social-emotional and skill development in line with the mission and culture of Sinai Akiba Academy.
  • A successful Athletics Coach should have extensive knowledge, as well as experience, in the sport and be able to articulate basic and advanced concepts effectively in teaching students how to play.
  • This is a part-time, non-exempt position.
  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Model and demonstrate Sinai Akiba’s Core Values of: Kehillah Kedoshah (Sacred Community); Talmud Torah (Academic Excellence); Derech Eretz (Kindness, Empathy, & Respect); Tzedek, Tzedek Tirdof (Ethical Responsibility); Avodat Halev (Soulful Intention), and Ahavat Yisrael (Love for Israel) as reflected on the School’s website at https://www.sinaiakiba.org/about/mission-and-values Plan, organize and lead practice sessions and game strategies Direct, encourage, and motivate athletes Maintain communication with the Athletic Director and school administration Keep records of athletes’ attendance and performance Ensure all athletes are familiar with league protocols and rules Create and implement strategies to support the individual athlete and collective team skill development Assist with game set-up and scoreboard operation, as needed Provide feedback and positive coaching during practices and competitions Mentor athletes to develop sportsmanship and respect for scholarship and athletics Maintain the equipment and facilities to ensure safe playing conditions Ensure consistent and appropriate supervision and guidance of the athletes at all times Normal working days and times are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:15 pm - 5:15 pm.
  • Adjusted times on game days Required to travel by bus to and from away games with the athletes Perform other duties as assigned by their supervisor and/or the Head of School in support of the school’s mission Specific Requirements for Girls’ Basketball Coaching Fundamentals and Skill Development: As the coach of the girls' basketball teams for 4th-8th graders, you will be responsible for fostering a positive, developmental environment where players are taught the fundamentals of basketball, including passing, shooting, dribbling, rebounding and defense.
  • The focus will be on building proper technique, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • Age-Appropriate Coaching: Tailor practices and coaching techniques to the developmental stages of 4th-8th grade players, understanding the varied skill levels and learning styles of young athletes.
  • Emphasize basic basketball principles, such as positioning, dribbling, passing, shooting, communication, court awareness and more.
  • Player Progression: Develop progressive drills that allow players to build confidence and proficiency in all areas of the game.
  • Support the team in progressing from learning basic skills in the early practices to applying strategies and game concepts in matches.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration: Guided by Jewish Values: In alignment with Sinai Akiba Academy's core Jewish values, foster a spirit of collaboration and mutual respect on the volleyball team.
  • Encourage players to embrace the concept of "Ahavat Chesed" (loving-kindness) by supporting one another both on and off the court, helping teammates improve, and celebrating each other's successes.
  • Teach the importance of "Kevod HaBriyot" (respect for others), emphasizing that every player has a unique role in contributing to the team's success.
  • Instill a sense of "Tikkun Olam" (repairing the world) by encouraging athletes to demonstrate good sportsmanship and kindness, not just in competition but in everyday interactions.
  • Promote the idea that, like a team, we are stronger when we work together and uplift each other, recognizing that our differences make us more powerful as a unit.
  • Positive and Supportive Environment: Ensure a fun, positive, and supportive learning environment where athletes are encouraged to take risks and learn from mistakes.
  • Maintain a balance between competitive spirit and personal growth for all players.
  • Game Preparation and Strategy: Help players understand the tactical aspects of basketball, including rotations, offensive and defensive strategies, and the importance of adjusting to different types of opponents.
  • Focus on teaching the rules of the game and ensuring players play with integrity and sportsmanship.

Requirements

AND QUALIFICATIONS Ability to lift and move objects of up to 30 pounds. This includes holding and carrying children when necessary for the health, safety or well-being of the child. The position may require physical activity for extended periods of time to lead class activities, including running, jumping, lifting, throwing, catching, kicking and balancing. Ability to quickly respond to children’s movements during activities. CPR/AED/First Aid certified

Compensation
