  • Position Overview: The apprenticeship program is a collaboration with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College school of Nursing.
  • The apprentice will attend classes at the MGCCC Tradition campus two (2) days a week.
  • The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) apprentice provides nursing care under the direction of the registered nurse (RN), advanced registered nurse (APRN), or licensed physician which does not require the specialized skill, judgment, and knowledge of a registered nurse.
  • The LPN apprentice care is in compliance with Singing River Health System policies and procedures to assess residents’ care needs and take appropriate action; includes recording vital signs, discussing chief health concerns, performing testing, and administering injections; assists with procedures and documentation.

Education

Must be currently enrolled in the Singing River Health System Apprenticeship course at MGCCC. High School or equivalent Diploma required.

License

LPN Apprentice I - at completion of academics and clinical training, must obtain Mississippi Practical Nurse license. LPN Apprentice II - must be registered with the state of Mississippi to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

Certifications

Must complete BCLS certification by the end of position orientation; must maintain current BCLS certification. May also require ACLS, TNCC and PALS pending of assignment of clinical training.

  • Demands:
  • Work is moderately active: involves frequent requirements to move about the office, move about the facility, and to travel to another facility within the SRHS service area. Work involves exerting a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Employee is responsible for safely moving, lifting and handling all supplies, equipment and patients, with assistance as required. Expected to use safe lifting practices in all areas of job performance and employees are responsible to request help whenever needed, regardless of the weight, using available assistance, i.e. lifting devices or additional staff. Work involves using many physical motions in performing daily work activities; subject to exposure of body fluids, sputum and tissues, which may carry the hazard of infectious disease.
  • Work involves using repetitive motions: substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and or fingers while operating standard office equipment such as computer keyboard. Work involves being able to perceive the nature of sound at normal speaking levels with or without correction; the ability to make fine discriminations in sound. Work requires close visual and acuity and the ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus, i.e. shift gaze from viewing a computer monitor to forms/printed material that are closer to compare data at close vision. Must be able to be active for extended periods without experiencing undue fatigue. Must be able to work schedules assigned with the understanding that changes may occur according to the needs of the hospital for off days, shifts or weekends.

  • Demands: Must demonstrate keen mental faculties/assessment and decision making abilities. Must demonstrate superior communication/speaking/enunciation skills to receive and give information in person and by telephone. Must demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills. Must possess emotional stability conducive to dealing with high stress levels. Must demonstrate ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Attention to detail and the ability to multi-task in complex situations is required. Must have the ability to maintain collaborative and respectable working relationships throughout

  • Demands: Attendance at the MGCCC Tradition campus two (2) days per week for coursework is required. Maintain good academic and attendance standing while in the apprenticeship. Poor attendance or performance during MGCCC coursework may affect status within SHRS apprenticeship program or healthcare system. Job requires traveling throughout the SRHS service area including the MGCCC Tradition campus with the employee providing his/her own transportation. Must have a valid driver license. Must possess superior customer service skills and professional etiquette. Must possess proficient knowledge and ability to use a computer (must be keyboard proficient) and other office technology (i.e., telephone, fax, etc.), MS Outlook and Word.
