Position Summary
The Career Development Specialist is responsible for supporting individuals with disabilities in achieving competitive and sustainable employment. This position focuses on assessing participant abilities and interests, developing job opportunities that align with their skills, and providing training, advocacy, and ongoing support to ensure successful job placement and retention. Additionally, the role promotes awareness of departmental goals and services to employers and the business community through outreach and presentations, fostering inclusive employment practices and long-term success for program participants.

- Key responsibilities
- Assess the abilities and interests of prospective participants.
- Explain the relationship between the employer and the consumer.
- Develop a pool of employment positions matching consumer skills and interests.
- Act as an advocate for consumers with employers, supervisors, and co-workers.
- Ensure all work-related paperwork is completed before job placement.
- Provide follow-up services, re-training, and re-placement as needed.
- Investigate and coordinate transportation; provide travel training if necessary.
- Arrange introductory meetings and work site tours.
- Provide on-the-job training when required.
- Assist consumers during interviews and the interviewing process.
- Monitor consumer progress in work environments and recommend improvements.
- Provide counseling for consumers and families to foster support.
- Deliver pre-placement training, follow-up, and job development services.
- Maintain and submit consumer-related files, reports, and data collection materials.
- Participate in annual Individual Habilitation Plan (IHP) meetings.
- Complete and submit all personnel forms, time sheets, and expense vouchers.

Qualifications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong judgment, problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with individuals with disabilities, families, co-workers, supervisors, funding sources, and other social service agency personnel.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other relevant computer software.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in a human service-related field.
- Experience working with individuals with disabilities is preferred.
