  • POSITION OVERVIEW The primary function of a Mandarin Montessori Teacher is to facilitate the development of the student in the cognitive, affective, ethical and physical domains of growth.
  • The teacher should have knowledge of the Montessori curriculum and philosophy and of the research and best practices in non-dominant language acquisition.
  • The teacher will support the program through planning, teaching and assessment/observation of students.
  • Teachers at Battery Park Montessori work collaboratively with their team in the planning of all curriculum areas – practical life, math, sensorial, language, science, cultural studies, art, etc.
  • They also actively communicate with families and work with the administration to maintain a positive school culture for everyone in the community.
  • The Mandarin Montessori Teacher is expected to provide students numerous opportunities to listen to and practice Mandarin through the teaching and learning of Montessori materials as outlined by the standard Montessori scope and sequence.
  • The Mandarin Montessori Teacher also is expected to create works – that are in line with the philosophy – intended to specifically teach Mandarin.

Responsibilities

Collaboratively determines appropriate learning objectives for students, taking into account the school’s curriculum and the observed/assessed needs of the students. Collaboratively plans appropriate learning experiences for individual, small and whole group instruction. Works collaboratively with other teachers to develop interdisciplinary connections between the subject areas. Ensures the concept of internationalism and anti-bias permeates all subjects. Ensures that essential agreements established with the teaching team at the beginning of the year are followed throughout the year. Establishes and maintains acceptable standards of student behavior in line with the school’s policies and philosophy. Reports individual student progress through established procedures (i.e. meetings with team, Assistant Head of School/ Head of School, parents). Prepares and continuously makes changes to the environment to ensure that it is a welcoming, functional, safe, attractive, de-cluttered, stimulating and physically comfortable environment Participates collaboratively in curriculum development, program planning, school evaluation processes, and other faculty meetings as required by the school administration Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service educational activities provided by the school and/or self-elected professional growth activities. Actively endorses and promotes the principles that underpin the language program and the Montessori curriculum, and contributes to a healthy Montessori culture in the school. Assists in the selection and requisitioning of books, instructional aids and supplies to the extent possible Works with colleagues, students, parents and community agencies in community service projects and relationships where possible Participates in the process of developing or reviewing the school’s curricular documents Establishes and maintains a record of completed planners and student work Maintains observation records of student assessment over the year Performs attendance accounting, record keeping and clerical services as necessary Establishes an inventory of resources to facilitate efficient management Identifies local people and resources that can be used to support the program Follows systems for communication and collaboration among all staff members involved in implementing the program Communicates with parents in line with the school’s policies including and not limited to phone calls, emails, parent and teacher conferences. Requirements

Education: Bachelor or Master Degree in Early Childhood/ Childhood Education or a related field preferred Qualified Montessori certification attained or in progress Fluent Mandarin speaker Experience: Minimum of two (2) years teaching experience Fluent in English (able to successfully attend workshops, read professional information and work collaboratively in the language.)
