Position Details

The Aide, Teacher Assistant or Associate Teacher’s duties include

Responsible for supervising individuals and groups of children between the ages of 4 months and five years in a sensitive and caring manner. Under the supervision of a Head Teacher, able to work as part of a team, follow instructions and take initiative as needed to ensure best practices are implemented throughout the day.

Essential Job Functions

Classroom Management: ● Maintain head counts at all times

● Review safety and medical procedures located in the “red binder”

● Follow Universal Health Precautions, diaper changing and sanitizing/disinfecting protocol (see Staff Handbook)

● Notify supervisor immediately of any injury to child and/or self

● Familiarize yourself with the “rhythm of the day” and location of curriculum materials ● Be aware of teacher-child ratios throughout the day and where best to locate yourself to supervise the children’s play

● Greet each parent/guardian and child by name as they arrive and depart

● Prepare snack and set-up for nap time

● Stage outdoor play spaces and afternoon activities

● Associate Teachers: Create curriculum plans with Head Teacher input

  • Working with Children and Families
  • Treat each child with dignity and respect in thought and action and be aware of own biases
  • Develop awareness of each child’s individual needs, interests and personality
  • Provide written observations and photos of primary children’s play and routines
  • Maintain positive parent-teacher communication
  • Maintain confidentiality of children, parents and staff at all times
  • Associate Teachers: Contribute to Child Portfolios, children’s assessments (DRDP and ASQ) and newsletter and participate in parent-teacher conferences
  • Center Maintenance
  • Maintain an orderly, attractive learning environment throughout the day (pick-up books, return items to shelves, etc.)
  • Stock shelves with supplies
  • Assist with daily cleanup: sweep indoors and out and use cloth rags for spills, not paper towels
  • Store personal belongings, like cell phones, in the corridor lockers
  • Staff Development
  • Adhere to NAEYC Code of Ethics
  • Read and write in the classroom communication notebook
  • Discuss teaching style and problem-solving strategies regularly with Head Teacher
  • Work to achieve individual goals throughout the semester
  • Read assigned articles and contribute to staff meeting discussions to examine your practice
  • Associate Teachers: Engage in reflective practice, assist with staff and intern assessments, supervise staff and interns in Head Teacher’s absence and attend local workshops offered by Center
  • Qualifications
  • Must be a student at SFSU enrolled in a minimum of 6 units for undergraduates or 4 units for graduates and able to perform the essential functions outlined in the Staff Handbook.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to

● Remain in a stationary position to meet the needs of the classroom.

● Move around freely to work with young children.

● Ascend/Descend children’s play spaces.

● Constantly activates their hand and wrist to work directly with young children and use electronic devices such as a laptop, iPad, telephone, walkie talkie.

● Constantly positioning themself by stooping, kneeling, crawling to be at the child’s

level.

● Communicate effectively orally and in writing with adults and children.

● Must be able to visually supervise children at all times. Abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

● Must be able to determine freshness of food prior to serving it to children.
