Job Title: Reading Interventionist (Middle School)

About the Role

  • The Reading Interventionist for Middle School plays a critical role in supporting students who struggle with reading by providing targeted, evidence-based instruction designed to improve literacy skills.
  • This position focuses on assessing individual student needs, developing personalized intervention plans, and delivering specialized reading instruction to help students achieve grade-level proficiency.
  • The interventionist collaborates closely with classroom teachers, parents, and other educational professionals to monitor progress and adjust strategies as needed.
  • By fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment, the role aims to build students' confidence and motivation in reading.
  • Ultimately, the Reading Interventionist contributes to closing achievement gaps and promoting long-term academic success for middle school students.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Reading, Literacy, Special Education, or a related field.
  • Valid teaching certification or licensure appropriate for middle school education in the United States.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of reading development, assessment tools, and intervention strategies.
  • Experience working with middle school students in an educational setting.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Reading, Literacy, Special Education, or a related discipline.
  • Certification as a Reading Specialist or equivalent credential.
  • Experience with Response to Intervention (RTI) frameworks and data-driven instruction.
  • Familiarity with diverse learning needs, including English Language Learners and students with disabilities.
  • Proficiency in using educational technology and literacy software to support instruction.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to identify students' reading strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Develop and implement individualized reading intervention plans based on assessment data and best practices.
  • Provide small group and one-on-one instruction tailored to students' specific literacy needs.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate intervention strategies and support general education curriculum.
  • Monitor student progress regularly and adjust instructional approaches to maximize effectiveness.
  • Communicate with parents and guardians regarding student progress and strategies to support reading development at home.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with research-based reading interventions and instructional techniques.
  • Maintain accurate records of student assessments, interventions, and outcomes.

  • The Reading Interventionist utilizes assessment and diagnostic skills daily to identify students' reading challenges and strengths, enabling the creation of effective, individualized intervention plans.
  • Strong instructional skills are essential for delivering engaging, research-based reading lessons that address diverse learning styles and needs.
  • Collaboration and communication skills are employed regularly to work effectively with teachers, parents, and other stakeholders, ensuring a cohesive support system for students.
  • Data analysis skills are critical for monitoring student progress and making informed adjustments to instructional strategies.
  • Additionally, adaptability and continuous learning are important as the interventionist integrates new research findings and technologies to enhance literacy instruction.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, school staff may be required to

  • Speak, stand, talk, walk, see, hear and, sometimes, to sit.
  • Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to read small print.
  • Frequently bend, reach above the head, as well as forward, and use fine motor skills.
