Description The McGillis School, an established, independent K-8 school in Salt Lake City, Utah has an opening for a full-time Middle School Learning Support Teacher beginning August 2026.

Position Description

The McGillis School seeks a skilled and collaborative Learning Support Teacher to partner with students, teachers, and families to support students with diverse learning profiles and academic support needs. Through a combination of push-in classroom support, small-group and individual pull-out interventions, and collaborative consultation, the Learning Support Teacher helps students develop the executive functioning, self-advocacy, and academic skills necessary for success in a dynamic Middle School environment. Furthermore, the Learning Support Teacher serves as a case manager for identified students, monitoring academic progress, implementing support plans, and facilitating communication among teachers, families, and outside providers as appropriate. The ideal candidate enjoys working with Middle School students, embraces the School’s mission and values, and thrives in a dynamic environment requiring flexibility, professionalism, initiative, and strong interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

Provide targeted push-in support to individuals and small groups within the Math & Writing classes in the 6th grade. Provide targeted pull-out support to a small group of students at each Middle School grade level, 6th-8th. Design and implement well-researched and appropriately scaffolded Executive Function supports with a vertical progression toward 8th grade. Support students in developing effective learning strategies and increasing independence. Monitor student progress and adjust interventions based on data and observed outcomes. Help students build confidence, resilience, and ownership of their learning. Serve as the primary case manager for assigned students receiving learning support services. Develop, implement, and monitor individualized support plans and accommodations. Maintain documentation of student goals, interventions, accommodations, and progress. Regularly review academic performance and identify emerging concerns or support needs. Coordinate communication among students, families, teachers, and administrators, as well as outside specialists when necessary. Facilitate meetings regarding student progress and support plans as needed. Attend and participate positively in faculty meetings and school events. Engage in professional development opportunities, as well as in the professional growth model specific to The McGillis School. Conduct oneself in a professional manner at all times. Participate in co-curricular program opportunities specific to The McGillis School (Family Group, Shabbat, Advisory, etc.) Participate in at least two multi-day school trips annually. Serve as a Mentor to a small cohort of Middle School students. Be patient, positive, and find joy in the journey of promoting a lifelong love of learning (limud l’shma). The ideal candidate will have: Enthusiasm and commitment for working with middle school students in various capacities, both inside and outside the classroom. A commitment to collaborative planning, research, and analysis of best practices of teaching and learning. A college degree in Special Education, a related subject area, or equivalent professional experience. Organizational skills, ability to multitask and demonstrates initiative Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a wide range of people including parents, faculty/staff, administrators, students, and community members Problem solving skills, resourcefulness, and attention to detail Ability to navigate sensitive situations with students/parents/colleagues Ability to maintain confidentiality while supporting school-wide administrative decisions and student information Familiarity with culturally competent teaching and the ability to build an inclusive and equitable community.
