  • SUMMARY: the direction of the Early Learning Director and Early Learning Lead Teacher,, the Early Learning Assitant Teacher is responsible for the assistance in guiding and instructing children through implementation of a developmentally appropriate daily program of activities promoting each child's affective, cognitive, physical, perceptual-motor, communicative and social competence. The position involves working with the Lead Teacher enhancing a team teaching approach to ensure the safe and healthful care and management of children in a nurturing environment. Involvement includes assisting in maintaining contact and open communication with families, program staff and community resources.

  • FUNCTIONS: Adhere to policies related to boundaries with youth. Complete required abuse risk management training. Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising youth. Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations. Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements. Responsible for assuring high standards of program quality and safety in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures and risk management policies. Assist in planning both long and short range activities in accordance with curriculum objectives, developmentally appropriate practice and program philosophy. Meet the emotional, social, physical and cognitive needs of each child. Maintains confidentiality related to children, families and staff. Speaks with families in a friendly, courteous, and respectful manner. Actively pursue training and learning opportunities and certifications relating to the position. Maintain current certifications/trainings required by the position. Maintain a classroom environment in accordance to program goals and philosophy. Keeps equipment and materials in good repair and stored in a safe, orderly fashion. Maintain a physically and mentally safe environment for the children. Children must always be in the presence of staff. Follows appropriate dress code set forth by the association. Attend all required staff meetings and give input on programming issues. Assists with maintaining all applicable licensing regulations. Adhere to State of Indiana Child Care Licensing rules and regulations. Be and set the example of excellency to other staff, maintaining an attitude of professionalism and loyalty. This job description is subject to change depending on program needs by the Early Learning Director and Child Care Executive Branch Director.

  • DEMANDS: Must be an active program leader and participate in physical activities included in our program components. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to: bend, stoop, kneel, twist, reach with hands, sit, lift and/or move up to 40 pounds, have finger dexterity, grasp, perform repetitive motions, talk, hear and have visual acuity. Ability to stand for long periods of time. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to noisy. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS: Minimum age of 18. An Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or other related field is preferred. Candidate must have a minimum of a High School Diploma and a minimum of 2 years of experience in early childhood education. Ability to assist with planning, organizing and implementing age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities. Excellent interpersonal communication skills. Possess an outgoing personality, be warm and friendly, and able to relate well to both children and adults. A commitment to working with children in a developmental setting and a sincere desire to have a meaningful effect on their lives. Able to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Ability to cope with stress and demonstrate appropriate professional reaction to other’s behaviors CPR/AED, First Aid, and Oxygen training required within 60 days of employment. Child Abuse Prevention, Bloodborne Pathogen and New Employee Orientation training required before/on first day of working with youth. Possess leadership qualities. Will need to be sensitive, mature and fair to all. Able to demonstrate creativity with daily planning and activities. Be able to work Monday-Friday, during program times. Be available outside of program hours to plan, train, and meet with supervisors. Have general knowledge of the YMCA’s mission and be able to convey it to the community. Willing and able to communicate with parents and facility officials in a positive manner.

Requirements

Requires a high school diploma and at least 2 years of experience in early childhood education, with an associate degree preferred. Must be able to obtain CPR, First Aid, and Child Abuse Prevention certifications.
