Program

SBCS’s Before and After School Programs work with local schools to provide safe environments for students to engage in extended learning and recreational activities provided for by the ASES and ASSETS grants. BASP programs include homework support, organized sports, arts activities and a multitude of academic activities in an environment parents can rely on to be safe daily until 6 p.m. These programs are housed in both traditional public and charter schools from 1st- 12th grades

Position Summary

Under the supervision of SBCS Site supervisor(s) the School Programs Youth Leader is responsible for the supervision, development and implementation of academic, enrichment, and social-emotional well-being for groups of 10-20 youth participating in the after-school program. Youth Leader will also assist students in improving academic skills and reaching performance goals in core academic subjects. Services will be in keeping with agency goals, objectives, mission and style and provided within a team framework. The School Programs Youth Leader is responsible for working in collaboration with the school site personnel to meet grant, school district, and SBCS afterschool program goals and objectives.

Essential duties and responsibilities

Participate in the planning and implementation of the program in accordance with the goals and policies of SBCS, State of California Department of Education and Sweetwater Union High School District. Oversee participants, demonstrate positive role modeling and provide guidance. Organize age-appropriate materials and supplies to facilitate use by students, including cleaning up work areas following activities and group rotations. Assist in the development and maintenance of accurate program records including participant registration and daily attendance in order to achieve and verify program goals are met. Ensure program attendance goals are met for specific programs. Recruit and promote the program to school youth and parents. Participate in the preparation of daily schedule/curriculum, which may include academic enrichment, snack distribution, recreation and/or leadership development as needed. Plan and coordinate the provision of age-appropriate activities and events for participants. Assist and guide students by maintaining a consistent, fair, professional demeanor and appropriate role modeling, emotional support, patience, a friendly and engaging attitude, while ensuring emergency procedures and safety are ensured at all times. Report student academic, behavior progress and performance to Site Supervisor, and confer as needed regarding student needs. Develop positive relationships and collaboration with school personnel. Set up/take down classrooms for regular After School Program activities. Provide tutoring assistance and academic enrichment in support of school site goals and standards. Observe, monitor, and control the behavior of students by reactively using appropriate behavior corrective strategies in accordance with their grade level. Offer positive feedback and alternatives. Be available evenings or weekends as needed to assist school and/ or SBCS special events. Ensure contractual requirements and SBCS policies and procedures are fulfilled at all times. Attend all required meetings and trainings. Other duties as assigned

Requirements

Must be one-year removed from high school graduation and three years removed from graduation/matriculation from SUHSD school you are applying to. Must meet and provide documentation of the minimum qualifications for Classroom Assistant if candidate does not have 48 college credits. AA or BA is highly desirable, passing score on district’s Instructional Assistant Test acceptable. Minimum of one year working with youth and/or children is highly desirable. Must be highly dependable. Must have a warm and friendly personality and the sensitivity to meet the needs of a diverse population. Must have the ability to lead sports, games and curriculum activities, and monitor behavior. Ability to provide leadership and stability to the program.

Conditions of Employment

Employment may be conditioned upon satisfactory completion of certain background clearances which may include a Department of Justice criminal background check requiring my fingerprints (Live Scan), screening through the National Sex Offender Public Website, tuberculosis (TB) test, and such additional clearances as may be required under the program. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act in an emergency situation. Mentally and emotionally: Ability to work under deadlines, various projects and dealing with clients in crisis and difficult situations. Must be able to remain in a stationary position during shift. Moves throughout the building. Moves, raises, or lowers (includes upward pulling) an object or equipment up to 50 lbs. Transports an object, from 20 to 50 lbs. across the facility, for various needs. Ability to exert force upon an object so that the object moves away from the force. Ability to exert force upon an object so that the object moves toward the force (includes jerking) Ascending or descending stairs and ladders when applicable. Body agility is emphasized.

Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when ascending, descending, traversing.

Stooping

Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.

Handling

Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with objects or office machinery.
