The After School Assistant provides active supervision and leads engaging activities to support the academic and social growth of school-age children. They are responsible for maintaining a safe environment, assisting with homework, and collaborating with families and school staff.

Job summary

Best Point Education & Behavioral Health is seeking an After School Assistant to support our school-age childcare programs by creating a safe, engaging, and supportive environment where children can learn, grow, and thrive.

The After School Assistant works directly with children during after-school hours by leading activities, supporting homework and enrichment opportunities, encouraging positive behavior, and building meaningful relationships with students and families.

This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy working with children, are passionate about youth development, and want to make a positive impact in their community.

Key responsibilities

  • Child engagement & supervision
  • Provide active supervision of children while maintaining a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Build positive relationships with children through encouragement, support, and consistent engagement.
  • Participate in daily activities that promote academic growth, social skills, creativity, and confidence.
  • Support children with homework assistance, recreational activities, and enrichment programming.
  • Use positive behavior support strategies to encourage problem-solving and conflict resolution.
  • Engage with children in a warm, respectful, and supportive manner.
  • Program activities & support
  • Assist with planning and implementing age-appropriate activities based on children’s interests, abilities, and developmental needs.
  • Help create an organized environment with engaging activity areas and opportunities for learning.
  • Participate in group activities and model positive teamwork and communication.
  • Assist with maintaining a clean, organized, and welcoming program space.
  • Family & team collaboration
  • Develop positive relationships with children, families, school staff, and program team members.
  • Communicate professionally and contribute to a positive team environment.
  • Attend staff meetings, required trainings, and professional development opportunities.
  • Represent Best Point in a professional and positive manner.
  • Administrative & program responsibilities
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and complete required documentation.
  • Follow all safety procedures, program expectations, and childcare licensing requirements.
  • Maintain required health and safety training credentials.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities and program evaluations.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Interest in working with children and supporting youth development.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to create a positive and supportive environment for children.

Work Environment

Exposed to a combination of office, school and mental health treatment environments. Exposed to children with behavior problems. May be exposed to shouting and clients who may be verbally and physically aggressive. May be exposed to blood or vomit and bodily fluids.

The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, bend and lift up to 50 pounds. Must be capable of sustained exertion and be able to participate in the physical restraint techniques and exercises required to ensure safety of clients at all times.

Requirements
