Position Summary

The Employment Skills Instructor is responsible for providing training, support, and evaluation to individuals with developmental disabilities in both curriculum and on-the-job training in an integrated community setting. They play a crucial role in researching and implementing curriculum, ensuring consumer safety, following agency policies and procedures, and working with consumers to achieve their individual program goals in a person-centered environment. Some weekend, evening, and holiday work may be required for most assignments.

  • This role bridges structured curriculum instruction with hands-on, on-the-job training, supporting compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations as well as the standards governing services to individuals with disabilities, including requirements set by the Central Valley Regional Center (CVRC), and Department of Developmental Services (DDS).
  • The position requires patience, sound judgment, strong communication skills, and a broad knowledge of disabilities, supporting both classroom-based learning and consumer safety and progress in integrated community job settings.
  • Key Responsibilities The duties listed below are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed and are not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities.
  • Field Operations or Community Work Assignments Leads and supports consumers on community-based job assignments including lawn care, grounds maintenance, lot cleanup, janitorial services, warehousing, recycling, and various other vocational work settings.
  • Operates hand and power tools and equipment used in field assignments and provides hands-on training to consumers in their safe and proper use.
  • May operate equipment such as sit-down forklifts, standing forklifts, pallet jacks, tuggers, and other warehouse or industrial equipment as required by the assignment.
  • Serves as the primary trainer for adults with disabilities performing field services, monitoring consumer activities to ensure safety and quality of workmanship throughout all assignments.

  • Curriculum & Consumer Outcomes Will be responsible for the research, design, development, implementation, and recording of outcomes of person-centered curriculum classroom modules for consumers regarding employment services and support.

  • Utilize Case Magic to document consumer outcomes, attendance, and goal progress in compliance with agency standards.
  • Participate in meetings and training as appropriate to the position.
  • Consumer Safety & Support Adheres to all agency safety procedures and policies.
  • Maintains vigilance in monitoring consumers’ activities and environment to ensure their safety.
  • Promptly report any safety-related incidents in accordance with agency policy.
  • Ensures that equipment is always operated in a safe manner.
  • Ensures the safety and well-being of consumers at all times in both the classroom and on-the-job training settings.
  • Policies, Procedures & Licensing Compliance Adheres to all agency and Community Employment Services (CES) policies, referral and funding criteria, and applicable regulations.
  • Facility & Vehicle Safety Operate and maintain the program facility and vehicles safely, ensuring compliance with agency policy and licensing provisions.
  • Conduct vehicle safety inspections and maintain vehicle cleanliness.
  • Maintain vigilance in monitoring consumers’ activities and environment to ensure their safety.
  • Drive a company or personal vehicle to transport consumers to and from the program and community vocational training activities.
  • Training & Professional Development Participate in meetings and training as appropriate to agency, position, and personal development needs.
  • Other Duties as Assigned May be required to use a personal vehicle, as necessary, in the course of fulfilling assigned duties and tasks.
  • Perform other assignments as necessary, which may extend beyond the essential and marginal duties listed above.

Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D. required Prior (1 year) experience working with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities or in a related human services field is preferred. Must be at least 21 years of age. Demonstrated ability to implement structured curriculum and document consumer progress and outcomes accurately and consistently. Ability to maintain composure and exercise sound judgment in a vocational training program or public environment, including during consumer transportation. English language proficiency required; must be able to read, write, and communicate verbally in English. Licenses, Certifications & Insurance Requirements Valid California Driver’s License required. Proof of current automobile insurance meeting California minimum coverage requirements is required. Must maintain a driving record acceptable to Able’s insurance carrier. Must complete a standard criminal background check and be eligible to work in the program in accordance with Regional Center requirements. Must obtain and maintain current First Aid and CPR certification (training provided by the agency).

  • Ability to estimate quantities, distances, and material needs for job site tasks.
  • Ability to use basic measurement tools such as rulers, tape measures, and scales accurately.
  • Ability to count, sort, and reconcile inventory or supply quantities.
  • Ability to read and apply numerical information from labels, schedules, and written instructions.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems involving a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
