Position Summary

  • Tutor students in various Mathematics courses taught in Johnson County Community College. Other responsibilities include referring students to appropriate resources, assist students with computer software, web-based homework platforms, and calculator skills necessary for the courses, help with problem solving skills required in Mathematics, and other duties as requested by the supervisor.
  • Willing to work afternoons, evenings, and/or weekends.

Required Qualifications

  • Requires high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of college level Calculus 2.
  • Requires basic skill set and proficiency.
  • Conducts work assignments as directed.
  • Closely supervised with little latitude for independent judgment.

Required Skills

  • Must be able to help with computer programs and online homework platforms.
  • Good communication skills, including listening with understanding and patience is required.
  • Ability to explain concepts and solve word problems in Mathematics, both orally and in written form in a one to one or small group setting

• Prior tutoring experience.

Position Details

include but are not limited to:

Tutor students through drop-in, by-appointment, and/or semester-long tutoring (online and/or in-person) in subjects, skills, or content deemed appropriate by the relevant supervisor; build rapport and supportive relationships with students.

Refer students to appropriate resources within the relevant resource center and larger Academic Resource Center.

Refer students to appropriate resources outside the relevant resource center/Academic Resource Center with consultation/direction from the relevant supervisor.

Maintain accurate and detailed records, adhering to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and keeping appropriate staff updated on student progress and problems.

Assist in the daily activities of the center, cover the front desk when needed, ensure students are checked in/out, and help maintain a positive, clean, and organized center space.

Assist students with computer systems/software and help students troubleshoot computer problems as they impact tutoring operations.

Use the appropriate scheduling system to manage and maintain tutoring schedules.

Participate in mandatory center training and other campus-wide training opportunities as appropriate.
