About the role

Facilitate assessments and teach ESL or HSE courses to adult learners within the NIACC service area. Provide a student-centered environment, document progress, and assist students with goal-setting and career exploration.

AEL INSTRUCTOR POOL North Iowa Area Community College continually accepts applications to build a pool of talented, dedicated AEL Instructors to provide high-quality instruction to adult learners in the various communities within the NIACC service area.

This posting is not a guarantee of an open position.

Applications are reviewed on an as-needed basis according to institutional needs in the current or upcoming academic year.

CATEGORY/LEVEL: Part-time BASIC FUNCTION: Work as a member of the Adult Education & Literacy (AEL) team.

Facilitate assessments and teach English as a Second Language (ESL) or High School Equivalency (HSE) courses.

Advocate for students, demonstrating sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds of AEL students, including those with physical and learning disabilities.

Class schedules vary by community.

Weekly time commitments average 6-12 hours for instruction and preparation, with occasional weeks increasing to as much as 15 hours depending on professional development or class needs.

SALARY: Hourly rate to be determined at time of hire; not to exceed 29 hours per week.

This position is not eligible for benefits.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree.

Strong computer skills and the ability to work with instructional technology.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team, as well as excellent organizational and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education-focused degree and teaching experience, as well as experience working with adult or high school students including those with educational and personal barriers. RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Understand and follow AEL program requirements, goals, and methods.
  • Complete required professional development and training requirements as assigned.
  • Provide a positive student-centered environment committed to student success that includes creating enthusiasm for learning and the subject, encouraging student participation and responsibility for learning experiences, building student pride in self-accomplishment and self-worth, collaborating with students to determine and plan for their learning goals, and providing timely feedback.
  • Utilize the provided curriculum and lesson plans.
  • Deliver engaging instruction through diverse formats, incorporating technology as needed.
  • Conduct orientation each session for new students.
  • Assess students and document attendance and progress according to AEL requirements.
  • Assist students with goal-setting, problem-solving, and career exploration.
  • Participate in AEL trainings and staff meetings.
  • Refer students to college and community resources.
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff and collaborating programs.
  • Attend and assist with the Education to Employment graduation.
  • Maintain standards of professional conduct and ethics.
  • Maintain strong organizational skills, demonstrate reliability, and communicate effectively with stakeholders. Fulfill other responsibilities as needed or assigned. Perform in a manner which strengthens the coordination and cooperation of all organizational components of the College, including opportunities for student recruitment. Requirements
