Job description

Job Title: School Nurse

Supervisor Job Title: Principal

Employment Status: Full-time; 10-month

FLSA Status: Salary

The management services offered to our family of charter schools, allows us to collectively become a change agent and national leader in urban education as evidenced by student awareness of self, high academic achievement, positive school culture and community transformation wherever we serve.

Essential Functions

The School Nurse is responsible for coordinating, collaborating, planning for, and, in most cases, providing direct services to ensure that the school’s health program, as defined by the Pennsylvania School Code, School District Policies, and the PA Dept. of Health Division of School Health Regulations is carried out according to the specifics in the Law (Mandated programs) and within the parameters established for approved Modified programs.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and/or oversees mandated screenings and complete referrals and follow-up where applicable.
  • Manage and control acute and chronic illnesses.
  • Provide first aid for illness or injury to students and document nursing assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.
  • Manage student files to ensure compliance of required health records.
  • Establish health care plans for students with special health care needs and update them as needed.
  • Review and monitor student immunization status.
  • Makes appropriate referrals to up-date immunizations when indicated.
  • Provide health teaching and counseling when applicable.
  • Maintain comprehensive health records on each child and records of school nursing services.
  • Assist in interpreting the health needs of individual children to parents and teachers and assists families in utilizing community resources for improving the health of their children.
  • Administer medications and perform procedures according to physician orders and school’s policies and procedures.
  • Ensure physician orders for individual student medications and/or treatments comply with requirements for administration.

    • Participate cooperatively in a program of school health nursing.
    • Exercise professional judgment in making decisions.
    • Communicate appropriately, collaboratively, and effectively with students, parents, administrators, other school personnel, health care providers, and community agencies.
    • Demonstrate a genuine interest in the student population and its health needs.
    • Organize a health office and manage time.
    • Be a self-starter or self-motivated.
    • Use a computer and various software applications.
