About the role

Lead mentoring groups to help students develop social-emotional skills and confidence through the EmpowerU program. Facilitate lessons, maintain session records, and collaborate with school liaisons to implement and adjust curriculum.

Position Summary/Purpose

Grand Canyon University (GCU) maintains relationships with nonprofit organizations identified by the IRS as 501(c)(3) by virtue of their charitable programs. The collective mission of 501(c)(3) organizations in the Phoenix Valley is to improve the quality of life for community residents or to solve particular problems related to those residents’ needs.

GCU maintains a partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central AZ (BBBSAZ) at 1615 E.

Osborn Road, Laveen, AZ, 85339.

BBBSAZ creates and supports one-on-one mentoring relationships between volunteers and children aged 6-18 in Maricopa County and Pinal County.

The CSLP student worker’s work schedule is dependent on the hours of operations and needs of BBBSAZ; however, CSLP student workers may not work more than 20 hours per week during the academic year (i.e., fall/spring).

If eligible, CSLP student workers can work during summer (i.e., May – August).

This position has been reviewed and approved as Community Service as defined by 34 CFR 675.2(b). Per 34 CFR 675.2(b), community services are defined as, “Services which are designed to improve the quality of life for community residents, particularly low-income individuals, or to solve particular problems related to their need.” These services must be open and accessible to the community.

As an FWS-CSLP approved position, its services will be offered to non-GCU community members (i.e., local residents).

Primary Responsibilities /Accountabilities/ Essential Functions

Through EmpowerU, trained mentors help students build social-emotional skills, strengthen decision-making, and develop the confidence needed to succeed in the classroom and beyond.

Lead mentoring groups by facilitating group relationship development and lessons. Maintain records of sessions and conduct check-ins with school liaison(s). Prepare and implement mentoring curriculum and activities while also recommending adjustments to materials as needed.

The anticipated schedule is as follows

Monday,

Wednesday, and

Friday: 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Optional extended hours (if preferred by the student): 9:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

  • Possess strong ethics, integrity, and sense of responsibility.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Previous Mentoring a plus.
  • Ability to speak a second language a plus.

Experience/Education

  • Grand Canyon University is committed to a student first policy. Therefore, all applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements to be considered for student employment:
  • Enrolled at GCU in a bachelor’s program or master’s program full-time during fall/spring or half-time during summer.
  • Maintain a 2.0 GPA as a Bachelor level student or a 3.0 GPA as a Master level student.
  • Maintain good financial and academic (SAP) standing with the University.

You may be subject to termination if you fall below the minimum requirements.

Pay Rate: Minimum Wage

Anticipated End Date: June 30, 2027
