Provide primary and episodic healthcare for boarding and day students, managing both acute and chronic illnesses. Responsibilities include medication administration, triage, and coordinating medical services with off-campus providers.
Must be a Registered Nurse licensed in Connecticut with BLS certification and at least 3 years of nursing experience. Candidates must reside within 20-30 minutes of Cheshire Academy and be proficient in electronic medical records.
Provides primary, acute, and chronic nursing care for students, adhering to facility protocols and policies, standing orders and professional scope and standards. Independently triages, evaluates and treats illness and injuries and refers to Medical Providers (APRN and School MD) when appropriate. Develops and maintains current health care plans Administers prescribed and over-the-counter medication in accordance with facility standing orders and medication policies. Conducts daily medication counts and documents all medication administration precisely in the electronic medical record. Manages and coordinates medication refills, monitors for effectiveness of medication and safely stores all prescription (including controlled substances), international, and over-the-counter medications. Documents all care in the electronic health record and properly maintains medical records and documentation Maintains confidentiality regarding the health information of the students Assures compliance with state mandates involving immunizations and physical examinations Identifies and responds to campus health emergencies, calls 911 when appropriate, shares students emergency health information (consent, insurance and pertinent medical information) with Emergency Medical personnel and coordinates with the school Administrator on Duty regarding communication with employees and the student’s family. Reports student excuses and absences for Health Center visits through computerized attendance program. Coordinates medical and psychological services with off campus health care providers through scheduling, communication, and implementation of follow up care needed Coordinates transportation for off-campus student medical appointments. Assists in management of International Health Insurance plans Assists in the planning and execution of a yearly influenza and Covid vaccine clinic in coordination with a local pharmacy. Coordinates catch-up vaccinations at the Department of Public Health as needed Provides health information, education and counseling for students, parents, and staff daily. Performs, interprets, and processes urine screenings on students by request from the Community Life/Deans' Office and student health contracts. Sends to outside lab if indicated. Provides first aid for employees and documentation of OSHA workman's compensation claims Makes appropriate assessments and referrals for suspected abuse/neglect as a mandated reporter On Call
When on call, responsible for answering the on-call phone for the duration of their shift and triaging student health concerns. Makes determinations over the phone whether the student’s condition can be managed on campus by employees or requires further in-person evaluation by a healthcare professional If in-person (non-urgent) care is warranted, the on-call nurse will be responsible for opening the health center to evaluate and treat the student.
