The Student Support Advisor coordinates behavior support and guidance services to promote a positive school climate at KDES. This includes leading professional development on behavior strategies, analyzing student data, and managing serious student incidents.
Collaborates with administrators, teachers, and staff to establish and maintain the best possible environment for learning, personal/social growth and student success; and works closely with teachers and staff dealing with students with behavioral, social, or emotional problems. Leads work on best practices in behavior management strategies including but not limited to Restorative Practices in working with students; and creates, designs, and leads professional development for teachers/staff on these identified strategies. Coordinates the discipline system for KDES with the School Psychology team; and works with teachers/staff to ensure that each student report and discipline situation is followed-through thoroughly and completely. Engages students in learning to make decisions and to accept responsibility for such decisions; and assists students, both individually and in groups, to modify attitudes and behavior patterns and to develop skills necessary for healthy development. Leads statistical analysis process of KDES student behavior data; analyzes trends in the data as a decision-making tool for school programming needs; and shares data with administrators and teachers/staff. Administers and interprets psycho-educational assessments, academic skills and aptitude, and functional behavioral assessments to determine how learning disabilities, attention disorders, cognitive deficits, and behavioral and emotional disorders affect learning. Assumes the responsibility for the implementation of Positive Behavior Supports and leads the planning for Hands on Desk (HOD); and plans monthly PBS activities and works with teachers/staff on positive behavior system strategies for improving student behavior. Serves as the member of the Student Enrichment Team (SET) ; and attends weekly meetings; and collaborates with the SET team on different school-wide projects. Creates, develops, and leads workshops related to various topics concerning student behavior, including the Clerc Center’s focus of eliminating harassment, discrimination, and bullying at KDES. Leads, in collaboration with the school administrators, the handling of serious student incidents as they arise; serves as the contact person for DPS/MPD on serious incidents involving police reports; and ensures that interpreters are available and used appropriately for all serious incidents. Conducts behavior assessments and implements behavior plans as part of the IEP process for students with serious behavior concerns. Collaborates with the counselors and psychologist on situations involving specific at-risk students; and shares information about student incidents among the school climate team. Participates in manifestation determination IEP meetings as needed. Serves as the primary contact for parents related to student behavior incidents; and maintains incident reports, as well as all corresponding paperwork (including official discipline letters to parents). Remains abreast of current and promising practices related to Restorative Justice, Transition, behavior plans and emotional intelligence used throughout KDES. Collaborates with other professionals in the field of deaf education providing consultation, training and technical support for the Clerc Center. Serves as an active, contributing member of the Clerc Center community and Gallaudet University as a whole. Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisors. Demonstrates a genuine commitment to belonging in the workplace and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning. Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX; and commits to completing Title IX training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis. Prioritizes safety in the workplace as a collective responsibility for the well-being of employees and fosters a culture of safety that is integral to our success, including strict adherence to safety procedures and protocols, as well as promptly reporting any safety hazards or incidents. Performs related and other duties as needed. Required Qualifications: Master's degree. A minimum of two years of professional experience with counseling, student services, or a related field. Ability to communicate in American Sign Language.
Experience working in a K-12 setting. Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities: Strong knowledge of effective practices in willingness to provide services to students and families in a variety of contexts (e.g., on-site job training and support, community based teaching, home-to-school travel training). Strong skills with program development, active team participation, and problem-solving. Strong knowledge and implementation of state-of-the-art instructional practices with deaf and hard of hearing students. Strong enthusiasm for working with students in grades K-12 of all backgrounds and abilities. Demonstrated ability to work with and across University departments, outside constituents and groups.
