The Assistant Athletic Trainer provides comprehensive health care services, including injury prevention, evaluation, and rehabilitation for assigned sports programs. They collaborate with team physicians, coaching staff, and university departments to manage student-athlete welfare.
Candidates must hold a Master's degree and be a BOC Certified Athletic Trainer with a VA Board of Medicine License. CPR/AED Professional Rescuer certification is also required.
POSITION SUMMARY: The Assistant Athletic Trainer is responsible for the clinical application and administration of comprehensive health care services for sports as assigned by Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine and Student-Athlete Welfare. This individual will be an integral part of the Sports Medicine Team who must build professional relationships with student-athletes, athletic and University department staff, parents, and the medical community. For medical related issues, the athletic trainer works under the auspices of the team physician. JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Clinical application and administration of comprehensive health care services for the assigned sports programs (90%) Coordinate and deliver all medical coverage and services for assigned team including prevention, recognition, evaluation and treatment of athletic injuries, acute care and emergency response to athletic injuries, rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries and health care administration. Communicate with Team Physicians, Coaching Staff, Strength and Conditioning Staff, Psychological and Psychiatric Providers, Registered Dieticians, and Academic Support Staff and other essential personal both written and verbal reports on the health status of each student-athlete. Provide support and assistance with administrative duties assigned to Senior Associate and Associate Athletic Trainers. (10 %) CONTACTS: Compliance – To work in cooperation on medically related compliance matters Academics – To communicate the effect of medical status on academic attendance or performance. Director of Facilities and Events – To communicate emergency action plans and severe weather updates. Athletic Equipment Manager – To collaborate on protective equipment and staff clothing orders Student-Athlete Family Coordinator – To communicate regarding questions family members have about medical issues. Communications – to provide communication to media about medical issues and update sports medicine website. Student Health Center – Referral and disability assessment of student-athletes. Counseling and Psychological Services – Referral for student-athletes with mental health needs. Strength & Conditioning – Supervision of health and safety and communication of injured student-athlete limitations. Campus Police – To collaborate on emergency response. Physical Plant – To conduct facility maintenance and repair Custodial Services – To collaborate on sanitation of medical facilities. Registered Dietitians – To provide education and counseling to student-athletes. Team Physicians and Consulting Subspecialists – To provide medical services to student-athletes. Resource Exchange Center – To provide nutritional supplement and drug education. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: May supervise athletic training students and work-study aides WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT Environment – Requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Exposures encountered - Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials. Essential physical requirements: Climbing, standing, stooping, typing, running Physical effort/lifting: Heavy Lifting – over 50 pounds. Required to work early mornings, late nights, weekends, travel, and be on-call as a regular part of the job.
Knowledge, skills & ability Knowledge and clinical skill in the prevention, recognition, evaluation and treatment of athletic injuries, acute care and emergency response to athletic injuries, rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries and health care administration A thorough understanding of evidence-based medicine and appropriate current standards of care in Sport Medicine. Thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, exercise physiology, nutrition, and strength and conditioning principles. Strong verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal communication skills. Adherence to all applicable NCAA, conference, and institutional rules and regulations is required. Education & experience: BOC Certified Athletic Trainer CPR / AED Certified for Professional Rescuer VA Board of Medicine License to practice Athletic Training Master’s degree is required WORK HOURS: Full-time, Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5 pm. 38.75 hours a week. Schedule may vary. Requires travel.
