The Boys & Girls Club of Whittier / Pico Rivera is seeking a passionate and dedicated Athletic Supervisor to lead youth sports programming. This role includes planning and facilitating structured sports sessions while fostering a safe, supportive environment that encourages athletic development, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
- Key responsibilities
- Support youth programming at assigned school sites.
- Assist students with homework and foster positive mentor-style relationships.
- Promote positive behavior using reinforcement and encouragement.
- Plan and implement youth sports activities that promote physical fitness and healthy lifestyles.
- Collaborate with the Athletic Coordinator to develop lesson plans, practice schedules, and special events.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and engaging environment for all participants.
- Always model and promote good sportsmanship and respectful conduct.
- Lead practices for up to 25 student-athletes, ensuring sessions are inclusive, age-appropriate, and developmentally suitable.
- Facilitate daily practices with attention to fun, safety, and skill-building.
- Enforce all Boys & Girls Club policies and procedures.
- Participate in daily site activities and contribute to a positive club culture.
- Attend mandatory staff training, meetings, and development sessions.
- Work collaboratively with other coaches and program staff.
- Supervise youth during practices and games, ensuring their safety and well-being.
- Serve as a positive role model and help youth develop conflict-resolution skills.
- Assist with game-day setup, including equipment and field/court preparation.
- Coach with a focus on effort, development, and sportsmanship while following league rules.
Qualifications
- Experience working with youth in educational, sports, or after-school settings.
- Background in or interest in youth sports coaching (preferred)
- Strong communication and engagement skills, especially with middle school-aged youth.
- Positive interpersonal skills to connect with students, staff, and families.
- CPR & First Aid Certification (required before hire).
- Must pass background checks, drug screening, and TB testing (required before hire).
- Bilingual in Spanish is a plus but not required.
- Completion of Mandated Reporter and Sexual Harassment Training (provided upon hire).
- Physical requirements
- Frequent standing, walking, running, bending, kneeling, and lifting (up to 20 lbs.).
- Ability to demonstrate physical sports movements (e.g., sprinting, stretching, jumping).
- Must maintain visual and auditory awareness of youth across large activity areas.
- Frequent use of hands and arms to operate and set up sports equipment.
- Periods of extended activity on gym floors, blacktops, or grassy fields.
- Environmental conditions
- Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors at school gyms, fields, blacktops, and community recreation sites.
- Exposure to various weather conditions (sun, heat, cold, wind, light rain).
- Fast-paced, high-energy work environment, especially during games and events.
- Occasional exposure to dust, dirt, and outdoor elements.
- May work in non-climate-controlled areas (e.g., outdoor courts or fields).
- Additional considerations
- Must respond quickly in emergency situations, including basic first aid or emergency relocation.
- Flexibility is required to accommodate changes in weather, scheduling, and site logistics.
