Practice for this role

About the role

Deliver personalized one-on-one tutoring sessions and prepare tailored instructional materials for students from Kindergarten to College level. Track student progress, communicate with parents, and collaborate with the team to improve teaching practices.

Teacher Tutors is hiring part-time tutors to join our team on a flexible basis.

We're seeking educators to support students from kindergarten through college in the subject areas they're most confident tutoring.

This role is ideal for tutors with strong subject-matter backgrounds who enjoy working one-on-one with students.

Our students range from those building basic skills to those tackling honors and AP-level courses.

Sessions take place in students' homes, at the library, at our Livingston, NJ office, or online.

Most of our clients prefer in-person tutoring, so we'd love tutors who are open to offering it.

We match families to tutors based on your preferred travel radius—you tell us how far you're willing to drive, and we work within that.

Responsibilities

Deliver one-on-one tutoring sessions tailored to each student's course, instructor's expectations, and learning goals. Plan lessons and prepare materials (practice sets, review guides, skill-building exercises, exam-style questions, and structured exam-prep schedules as test dates approach). Build students' fluency with core skills and concepts in your subject area, along with their ability to move between different ways of understanding and applying the same material. Track progress across sessions and adjust pacing, materials, and difficulty based on what's working. Submit a short session note after each session and flag concerns to our Director early. Communicate clearly and warmly with parents. Contribute to our team's shared practice: share what's working, ask questions, and help us keep raising the bar. Bachelor's degree in your subject or a closely related field. Master's and PhD candidates are welcome. Demonstrated mastery of your subject at the level(s) you'll be tutoring, with the ability to scale up to more advanced coursework. Tutoring, TA, or classroom teaching experience—formal or informal—with students at the relevant grade levels. Working familiarity with the relevant curriculum standards or exam frameworks (e.g., state standards, AP course frameworks) and the common areas where students struggle. Strong communication skills and the patience to work with students who may arrive frustrated, anxious, or burned out after a rough test or assignment. Ability to plan individualized sessions and adapt in real time when a planned approach isn't landing—including explaining the same concept in multiple ways until it clicks. Availability for afternoon, evening, or weekend hours during the school year, with extra capacity around exam season and finals. Comfort with educational technology. Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license for in-home sessions. Preferred A track record of strong outcomes with students in the subjects and levels you'll be tutoring (e.g., grade improvement, test-score gains). Background or experience that allows you to support advanced or specialized coursework within your subject. Familiarity with the major textbooks or curricula commonly used in the courses you'd support, so you can meet students inside the framework their teacher or professor is using. Real-world or professional experience (academic, industry, or research) that helps you make abstract concepts concrete. Bilingual (Spanish, Mandarin, or other languages common in the communities we serve). Compensation & employment status Pay range: $40–$50/hour, based on degree and experience. W-2 (default): Most part-time tutors join as W-2 employees. Teacher Tutors handles payroll and taxes and provides liability coverage during sessions. 1099 (optional): Tutors who prefer 1099 contractor status are welcome, provided they carry their own professional liability insurance and operate through a registered LLC. Documentation will be requested during onboarding. Coverage area We serve families across northern New Jersey, with most in-home sessions concentrated in Essex, Morris, Union, and Bergen counties. We'll match you with students within the travel radius you set when you join.

Requirements

Requires a Bachelor's degree (or higher) and demonstrated mastery of the tutoring subject along with previous teaching or tutoring experience. Must have reliable transportation, a valid driver's license, and availability for afternoon, evening, or weekend hours.
